Bike Commuting from HPP to Hilo - buyag - 03-13-2008

My family and I are looking into buying a home in HPP (or other similar area). We currently rent in Hilo. My husband works in downtown Hilo and bikes to work. I am wondering if anyone out there commutes to hilo on a bicycle from the Pahoa, HPP, etc. area or knows of anyone that does. What are your experiences and/or advice. He is a skilled bicyclist but I know that traffic on 130 can be rotten. Wondering if anyone does it? thanx for your thoughts.

I haven't biked from HPP to Hilo. But I would think it would take at least an hour for an experienced cyclist each way. And it would get old real fast in the pouring rain.

I think that would be like suicide on that road!

Might be safer on on electricbike, charged and ready both ways! You can help pedal up the hill coming home, but could better concentrate on riding in both directions if not pooped and stressing!

I can't imagine it would be a good idea.
As one of the people who could easily hit a bicyclist in the rain, I wish bicyclists wouldn't take on major roads without bike lanes. I mean, it's a nice idea to safe gas and get exercise, but cars on highways, rain, and bicyclists don't mix.

I have to be honest and say the bicyclists who put themselves into this mix kind of make me mad. I have enough to do looking out for the cars. That may sound selfish, but I'm just being honest.

There are houses for sale in Hilo ... if you want to save on fuel, and there is a bus.
It's your life and your choice, but I think the "live in Puna, commute to Hilo" mentality is not a good one and is creating lots of problems -- treating Puna as a bedroom community. And yes, bicycling creates more problems for people who need to use the roads than cars do, because of the accident potential.

Best of luck though in figuring out what's going to work.

I biked a few times from HPP to UHH (over to Shower then only ridding on the shoulder. One day a guy was strap towing a car, 50+MPH with no one in the tow car. The tow car was weaving into the shoulder lane, knocking down a couple of the little markers.... That was the last time I biked on 130... Only did Railroad once, not pratical for a work commute
There is an option of riding up to 130 & taking the bus (only a dollar to bring the bike with)

All that, plus you can't hear the hybrid cars coming up from behind.

Like some said above, daily bike commute HPP - Hilo does not come across as a great idea.
We have a neighbor who sometimes bikes one way and motors the other in the car with his wife when she going to/coming from work in Hilo. He uses his bike in Hilo to run errands.
Still, a daily jaunt? I do wish the road permitted it...
