Surfing Pohoiki - bigwavedave - 05-29-2018

I heard they were letting surfers through at checkpoint at 4 corners, is this true? Or are surfers parking at the dead end / blocked entrance and just walking down the dilapidated road to Shacks/Bowls? Without anyone really knowing that they are there. It's hazardous I know, but as a surfer we know of all the other hazards that are many aside from laze, lava, H2S, and Sulfur (the smell was already there before eruption).

Missing my friends and my spot...

Yesterday.
Not today and probably not anytime in the near future.

letting surfers through at checkpoint at 4 corners

Unless the situation has changed, you need to be a resident and have a placard to get through the 4 corners checkpoint. That was the situation on Sunday. In addition, there is another checkpoint near Vacationland Kapoho Kai road. The first few days or so after the eruption started residents could watch the lava and fountains from just west of there, now even they can't get to a good vantage point on Red Road.

Also, the Pele drum circles that had formed to chant and throb to the rhythm of the explosions and fountains are rumored to have disbanded.

I'm assuming the placard is only for those who live beyond the checkpoint.. so Pohoiki was open yesterday, but only to residents who lived beyond the checkpoints?

So, you can only get a placard if you live down below the checkpoints? What if I lived in Haw Shores and wanted to surf could i get a placard? Ok...Just checking

What if I lived in Haw Shores

Placards are issued only to residents who live in the area beyond the checkpoints, not all residents of Big Island.

How much to rent a placard? First bay must be wide open!

Pohoiki was only to be open as long as 132 was open. Now that 132 is pau, it doesn't matter any more. [Sad]
