Mixed Martial Arts - Guest - 03-15-2008

We have a world champion in a controversial sport.

BJ Penn represents the Big Island when he fights.

I think it's pretty cool that he was honored Friday at the Legislature.

I've met him personally and he sure has mellowed out in the last few years.

I saw BJ fight once against matt hughes and BJ is a bad ass. BJ threw a punch in Matt's guard that sent Matt realling. They said after the fight that BJ broke his hand with that punch.
The one I want to see BJ fight is Anderson(the spider) Silva, Silva is a badddddd mannnnn.
My other dream fight I would like to see is Wonderlei (The axe murderer) Silva against Kimbo Slice. If you dont know Kimbo Slice then look for his "street fight's" on Youtube he is siccccccccccccccc.

He (BJ Penn) lives around the corner from my Hilo house. I know a number of people that grew up with him. He was a bit of a ... difficult young man ... but has grown into a really good man. His gym last year was replacing a lot of equipment and donated the older (but still great) equipment to Hilo High School. The equipment he donated was "used" but far better than what Hilo High had to use previously.

His house (I've only seen the outside) is phenomenal. It was an older run-down place in a good location with stunning views. He's spent what I can only imagine is a small fortune to bring the house back to the beauty it once had (and now has again). If the inside is anywhere near as good as the outside....

And if you're reading this, BJ, can I see the inside? I won't bother you for more than about 15 minutes.

I wish him well, and it's always nice to see the local kid succeed. I never met him but did wait behind him in line once at a restaurant. He seemed very polite and nice and the proprietor spoke very highly of him after he left(otherwise I wouldn't have know who he was). That said, I do seriously question the value of that sport to our society.

It's funny, you can hear coqui in the backround noise of BJ's gym training videos.

MMA is a personal choice. But let me set the record straight for those who don't know. It has come a long way since the days of the early UFC. Rules, rules, rules, are now the main thing with MMA. No longer are you allowed the "give" countless smashes to your opponent's crotch. Hitting one to the back of the head is illegal too. I mean there are all kinds of rules in place now. The 'Ref' will step in instantly if he suspects one fithers is unable to defend himself properly.

Oink, boxing, wrestling, full contact karate, Muay Thai, Brasilian Ju Jitsu, are all different in their own way. In today's MMA, a figther must be well rounded in all these styles to survive an evening with a good MMA fighter..

I believe this sport has a place in our society!

brah, that's all it is is a dream! No way in heaven is Vanderlai gonna fight Kimbo Slice. One is a heavyweight, and the other is a welterweight, or lightweight. Besides, Kevin Ferguson aka Kimbo Slice has to prove himself more! Youtube has made him so far, and now his future is in the hands of his new coach, Bas Ruttan. Besides, Vanderlai Silva has lost like 3 of his last four fights!?

But age is a big factor in Kimbo Slice's future. He is what, 35 or older? Plus he is a heavyweight. Only a handful of heavyweights have had a career that last 8 or more years. Now if Kimbo last for a while and does good in this weight division. The gold at the end of his MMA Rainbow would go by the name of, Fedor Emelianenko! But Slice is still a long ways away from that beating![B)]

Tomorrow night (5/31) tape delayed at 8 PM here in Hawaii on CBS...

EliteXC Fights Begins!

And what a great card for the Grand Beginning.

Here are some of the fights:

Kimbo Slice vs. James Thompson
Robbie Lawler vs. Scott Steel
Phil Baroni vs. Joey Villasenor

TWO GIRLS - Gina Carano vs. Kaitlin Young ... I vote for Carano on looks alone [Big Grin]

Are just some of the fights I'll be looking forward to watching for FREE!

At this point in time, I find Kimbo a much better actor than MMA Fighter. But that can all change in the next year or so. But the clock is running out on Kimbo. After all he is in his late 30's.

Kimbo the actor. I love the series too!
