Proper disposal of microwave? - punafish - 03-17-2008

What's the responsible way to dispose of a broken microwave oven?

I'm happy to give away to anyway who can repair it.

Mahalo in advance.

Tim

Funny you ask, Hawaii's Legislature is discussing HB2509 that basically:

Establishes a state program for collection, recycling, enforcement, and monitoring of covered electronic devices; establishes program funding through the electronic device recycling fund.

*edit*
Microwaves would be covered in this act.

There will be another hearing on this tomorrow:

The committee(s) on ENE/EDT has scheduled a public hearing on 03-18-08 at 3:15 pm in conference room 414.

O.K. Damon, I'm putting you to the test. How many states have introduced legislation in the past 6 months where the wording of the legislation is almost exactly the same (with variation for states name, enforcement agency name, etc) as this bill? Do you really thing Hawaii came up with this on their own or do you think its part of a greater organized effort that's behind the bills?

FYI, Microwaves wouldn't be covered (“shall not include”) as the bill is primarily aimed at televisions and computers.

As for punafish. Microwave ovens don't contain anything considered hazardous. It's not like a $10 ionized smoke detector, which has a radioactive particle inside. Consider it nothing but a big CB radio that Tim the ToolMan messed around with. If there's an electronics recycling center, they usually will take them off your hands. I usually find a used appliance and repair store that's willing to take it for free. They fix them up with a few dollars worth of parts and sell or donate them.

Damon is the man. Did you work for Shell at one time, Damon?[8D]

Aloha! ;-)

Thanks... but I'd prefer to just be known as a guy with too much time on his hands and a willingness to help others with online questions.

Nope... never worked for a "Shell" that I know of... nor have I worked at any gas stations of the same name.

I did work at the legislature for a year... not under anyone in particular.

Last time I was there Nov 2007 it appeared a whole bunch of locals seem to think the best way to discard old appliances is to take them down to Beach Rd.[Sad!]

Did I just say that????????? Sorry just kidding[}Smile]

As a matter of fact, someone just dropped a microwave on Beach Road day before yesterday. It matches all the other crap someone has been dropping lately. Anyone need any workout equipment?

Seems like we have a new yard and garage cleaning service in the neighborhood. Sure beats paying dumping fees as well as saves on gas.

Put it by the road in front of your house with a "for sale" sign. It will be gone the next day. [Wink]

Punafish, did you dump that mictrowave on Beach, and now you're just trying to cover your tracks, come on fess up [Wink]
