I can't quite shake the feeling of intention by this lava flow. I know it makes no sense but that's the feeling I get. The manner in which the Fissue 8 flow traveled down Hwy 132 following the road then as it neared Green Mountain shot a thin arm of lava to the south and zapped Green Lake.
The it took a right turn at four corners and proceeded to destroy the length and breadth of Kopoho and Vacationland. Quite astounding.
Then to multiply irony the PGV facility remains to this moment relatively unscathed. I hope PGV survives.

When something can be tied into a nice tight little bow, it’s a conspiracy theory. When something is a tangled web of a mess and can’t easily be put together and has numerous moving parts, It’s usually a conspiracy. At least that has been my experience. Conspiracy theories are simple, conspiracies are not. One is usually the truth and the other is not.

Agreed Rob.
We need the PGV infrastructure to be here when this is all over so's to be able get it started up again, and to have more like it put in afterwards.

As some of us will recall, a year or two before the lava took Kalapana, including Walter's store in 1990, a large group of squatters had started camping next to the large tide pool at the base of the cliffs.
They caused problems, including the spread of hepatitis because of poor sanitation.
After the eruption, old timers repeatedly asserted that "Pele cleaned out the hippie squatters."
That was quite an assertion of intention also.

Rob - I wonder if it's simply one of the stages of mourning? It may not be completely rational but it's part of the process. Perhaps the feeling that it's intentional is part of the anger phase.

I agree Rob - the word spooky is what keeps coming to mind for me. Even when familiar with other lower east rift zone eruptions, the explosive andesite at fissure 17, and the high volume, 5-mile long channelized 'a'a path to Wa Kai O Pele and Kapoho appear unique and significant.
Maybe it's part of the grieving process, or a human tendancy to anthropomorphize, but at times lava temperatures and steepest descent paths feel insufficient to explain and captuere the events unfolding.
