State has $174 million for B.I. How much for Puna? - Rob Tucker - 03-18-2008 In the Trib today: http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/articles/2008/03/18/local_news/local01.txt The article says the State of Hawaii is budgeting major money for the Big Island. Can anyone figure how much is going into Puna? The fastest growing district in the state.... Big Island CIP -- Fiscal Year 2009 Waimea Transfer Ditch Improvements $200,000 Paauilo Rendering Plant $600,000 Kona Civic Center, Operational Assets Management $500,000 Keaukaha Joint Military Center $480,000 Keaukaha Joint Military Center $6,455,000 Kahuku Disaster Shelter $1,450,000 Keonepoko Elementary $400,000 Waiakea High School $1,750,000 Waimea Middle School $5,000,000 Kohala Hospital, X-ray System $414,000 Hale Hoola Hamakua, X-ray System $414,000 Ka'u Hospital, X-ray Equipment $414,000 North Kona Water System Improvements $11,500,000 DOCARE, Honokohau Harbor $100,000 Mauna Kea Composting Toilets $250,000 Hilo International, Taxiway F $405,000 Hilo International, Parking Lot Expansion $3,235,000 Hilo International, Noise Attenuation $4,950,000 Hilo International, Noise Attenuation $550,000 Kona International, Terminal Improvements $3,000,000 Hilo Harbor, HMP Pier 4 Interisland Cargo $13,400,000 Puainako Street Extension $1,200,000 Puainako Street Extension $300,000 Kawaihae Harbor, HMP Development Plan $500,000 Kawaihae Harbor, HMP Pier 2 Terminal $26,000,000 Kawaihae Harbor, HMP Pier 4 $9,000,000 Guardrail and Shoulder Improvements $1,200,000 Guardrail and Shoulder Improvements $300,000 Kealakehe Parkway Extension $4,000,000 Kealakehe Parkway Extension $1,000,000 Traffic Improvements at Intersections $1,100,000 Volcano Road Intersection at Kulani Road $2,400,000 Volcano Road Intersection at Kulani Road $600,000 Volcano Road Drainage $2,000,000 Volcano Road Drainage $500,000 UHH US Geological Survey Building $33,000,000 UHH Student Services Building $1,640,000 UHH Hawaiian Language Building $19,893,000 UHH Electrical Generator $3,500,000 Hawaii Community College $11,207,000 TOTAL $174,807,000 So who do we thank for this performance? RE: State has $174 million for B.I. How much for Puna? - Guest - 03-18-2008 The squeaky wheel gets the oil. Trust me... it will get better in the future as more people realize that Puna is getting shortchanged. What happened to the modified 2008 - 2009 CIP budget that was to include evaluating sidewalk needs? (Or is this a different funding source?) Mauna Kea Composting Toilets $250,000 These better be some damn fancy toilets! RE: State has $174 million for B.I. How much for Puna? - Rob Tucker - 03-18-2008 The sidewalk evaluation is to be in the County CIP budget. RE: State has $174 million for B.I. How much for Puna? - Guest - 03-18-2008 Thanks for the clarification. Sounds like we need to make more noise in PUNA.[ ![]() RE: State has $174 million for B.I. How much for Puna? - mac nut - 03-18-2008 Thank Rob. Can I put in a bid on that UHH geolgical survey building? I think I can save them about 30 million! RE: State has $174 million for B.I. How much for Puna? - Rob Tucker - 03-19-2008 Mac Nut, They aren't interested in saving money. Saving money means less in the back pocket. RE: State has $174 million for B.I. How much for Puna? - Nalu Mama - 03-19-2008 shoots- no kidding! my question is, WHY does PUNA keep getting shafted? Breathe. Relax. Focus. RE: State has $174 million for B.I. How much for Puna? - jdirgo - 03-19-2008 Its not justification, because Puna is being shafted, but many of the Hilo improvements will have benefits for Puna. Improvements at UHH and the Community College do benefit us, as do airport and pier improvements. Those are $91.7 million of the almost $175 million (52.5%). The direct Puna improvements are another almost $6 million (and may be more depending on where those nebulous "guardrail, shoulder and traffic improvements" are done). Puna does need more, but at least the East Side in general is finally getting some work done. Granted, a mere 1% of the total ($1.75 million) could work miracles in our health care. Sheesh, Rob, what do you expect? Quote from a March 8th article about the opening of the new lava flow viewing area: quote:(emphasis mine) What does that say about our government and our Governor (who is from MAUI -- you know, that island we can see from the north part of this island)? How much for Puna? - Guest - 03-28-2008 Anyone attempt to go to the Governor's East Hawai'i Community Advisory Council meeting that got cancelled last night? I'm curious as to why it was cancelled.[?] *edit* So much for trying to cut and paste certain things RE: State has $174 million for B.I.
