Suggestions for vacation - mgeary - 03-20-2008 I booked the trip for summer 2008, and I'm totally stoked. Pamela and I were there last summer to get married. We did that, and we did all the usual stupid touristy stuff. Simply the best vacation I've ever had in my life, and I've had a few good ones. Last summer, we spent a little time (actually quite a bit of time) driving around the island, getting to know the districts and some of the neighborhoods. I've got it fairly well burned in my head the "flavor" of the various districts (Hamakua has a different flavor than Puna, than South Blowhala, than Kona, etc.), but Pamela is still pretty lost. I have to remind her, "Remember, sweetie, Hawi is that pretty little town where we had the sweet French rolls at the little bakery shop with the art store next door where the lady talked story with you about her mother with Alzheimers?" This summer, we booked two weeks in a rental house in Puna. We're going to snorkel, look at the lava, and eat waaaay too much good food, but the goal is to really get a feel for living in Puna. I plan to try to sort out in my head the various subdivisions and their charactersitics (does the county water end at Fern Acres, or Eden Roc?, how are the roads in Nanawale?) I'm going to throw out a suggestion, perhaps if anybody is interested, we could have a "Punaweb dinner" at one of the restaurants in Pahoa. If you want, you could put a face with Mark Geary, so that I'm not just some nebulous Internet persona of mgeary to you. I could put a face with some of you, also, and maybe even pick your brains a little more than all of the information here that you all have been so gracious to post here on Punaweb. We will be in Puna from June 26th through July 10th. An early date for a "Punaweb dinner" get-together would be better, so that we might have time to follow up later if any of us strike up a friendship. I'll throw out a date of Friday, June 27th, at 6:00 p.m. I have only eaten twice in Pahoa; lunch at the Thai restaurant on the north end of town (excellent food) and a breakfast at an upscale mom-and-pop gourmet omlette/burger restaurant on the east side of Main street, near the center of town. Both meals were very good, but I don't know how crowded they are for dinner. I don't know if the Friday is a good day for the same reason. Maybe it would be better to pick Sunday, June 29th. Any suggestions? There. I'm throwing it out for your ideas and suggestions. As I said, I'm hovering and vibrating with anticipation. Totally stoked. Whether or not I get to meet any of you won't affect our pleasure or our purpose, but several of you here on Punaweb sound like very colorful, interesting people, full of knowledge and most importantly, the spirit of aloha. I look forward to seeing some of you, if you're willing. Aloha! ;-) RE: Suggestions for vacation - Royall - 03-20-2008 Mark, it might be easier to talk someone into having a Punaparty [:p]about that time on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Less stress on the pocketbook for many and a lot easier to talk story with more people than taking up time and space in a restaurant.[] Who knows.... Maybe Cathie and I will be up to it by then.[?] It's still a ways off.[] Royall What goes around comes around! RE: Suggestions for vacation - Kapohocat - 03-20-2008 Seaside Bob and I will volunteer since we will be right around the corner from Mark. How about 3 - 6ishPM to start? Anyone who wants can go to the tidepools beforehand can and if others go to the lava flow at dusk still plenty of time? just need date... how about the first Saturday you are in town Mark? RE: Suggestions for vacation - mgeary - 03-20-2008 quote:I thought of that, but I also thought it would be rude of me to invite my wife and I into your home. If somebody is willing, great. Saturday is great, Cat. I'm, uh, not busy.[8D] Aloha! ;-) RE: Suggestions for vacation - Kapohocat - 03-20-2008 Saturday the 28th? RE: Suggestions for vacation - mgeary - 03-20-2008 Works for me. Saturday, June 28th, 3:00ish - 6:00ish. Your place. Potluck? I'll bring a veggie/pasta dish of some kind, and a grip of soda pop (I don't drink anymore) and a couple bottles of White Zin (Pamela does). Thank you for being gracious, Cat. Now all I gotta do is figure out where "your place" is, and get to the store. Oh, yeah, we gotta get to the BI first.[^] Aloha! ;-) RE: Suggestions for vacation - Kapohocat - 03-21-2008 quote: Sounds good! I will let you be the cruise director and we will supply the location!! ha ha Potluck is good. Any theme? How about favorite local dish? I'll supply paper products, ice chests, ice, chairs, tables, and iced tea! I'd pick a Hawaiian theme, but I'm not very creative. Spam just popped into my head. You pick. I'll find this thread in early- to mid-June, and bump it back up to the top as a reminder. Aloha! ;-) RE: Suggestions for vacation - Guest - 03-21-2008 If I'm in town... I'm down.[^] BTW: Boogie Woogie Pizza does not Boogie to my taste buds. RE: Suggestions for vacation - Carolann R - 03-21-2008 I'm there! I'm there![][][] Yay!!! Everyone over to Seaside Bob's and Cat's House!! P.S. Damon the pesto pizza is really good. Generally, we are in love with Pizza Hawaii down by Malama Market...very gooooood. Also - they have a coupon in the Sunday TV Section of the paper and you can save $7 bucks off a large cheese & pepperoni! (Okay, I'm on a diet and have to live vicariously through others now OKAY?!)
