Hello! I've been reading the posts on this forum for several weeks now and I finally decided to introduce myself. My name is Ben Jensen. I'm a chiropractic student in St. Louis and I'm about to graduate. My wife and I have been looking for the 'perfect place' to settle down. I know perfection isn't attainable but since our visit to the BI and after the last 2 years of researching, we've decided to take the big plunge and move to the Hilo/Puna area, which is as close to perfection as we could imagine. We've fallen in love with the culture, island and lifestyle and we feel it will be the perfect place to settle down and raise our 2 little boys.
I'm looking into establishing my own private practice in the area and we'll be making a move in January '09. We'll also be visiting again in August to get the ball rolling on some of the aspects of the business.
That's a mouthful for now, but I welcome all suggestions/tips/advice that you have!

Hello to you and family, I have just completed a move from California. I didn't expect to be doing it by myself but Mr. B is completing a job assignment on the Mainland. We bought our house a little over a year ago and visited a number of times during the past year. My neighbors have been angels, my car and goods got here quickly...it's the slow time of the year I'm told. I finally found the toaster today. Packing and moving in the snow was hell, but for those following the move, the wine seems to have survived it's container passage just fine. I'm enjoying a Caludia Springs zinfandel tonight. I'm lovin' Hawaii Island...was told calling it the BI is insulting.

Welcome home julieb...I can relate to leaving the snow and the joy that brings - grew up in Buffalo, NY.

Anyone else think that someone was telling julie tales about calling the "Big Island" by that name is insulting? EVERYONE I know, including a lot of people that grew up here and are of Hawaiian descent, call it that.

i had heard a few years back and i can't remember where, that there was a move to start calling this island by the proper name of Hawaii island. i got the feeling that it was the tourist industry being pressured by folks who are trying to right some of the pronunciations of all things Hawaiian.
On another similar note the way the news folks are pronouncing Halema'uma'u (instead of Halemaumau) is totally different then the way i have always heard it in the past...
which then begs the question -How should you say lau lau?

Welcome DrJ and family. You have found the most incredible online commnity, possibly in the world. Mostly transplants from Mainland USA and a few from around the world, these people work together, laugh together, help one another and generally make the stressors of relocation melt...

I lived in STL for 7 years, haunting WashU, U City, Laclede's Landing, Central West End & working at Ralston downtown. I'm betting you'll love it here - our winters are WAAAAY better!

"Hawaii."
"I know you moved to Hawaii, but which Island was it?"
"The Big Island."
