Volcano vs Hurricane - Full Coverage? Or... - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 08-04-2018 Volcano versus Hurricane. Full coverage? Or is media the coverage full of it? Over the past week we have had discussions on several other threads about: 1) What might occur if a hurricane reached Hawaii Island while the eruption was ongoing? 2) How accurate are reports in the media about events in Hawaii or events affecting Hawaii? As time allows, I may transfer some earlier comments from the other threads, but I thought I'd start off with excerpts from this late breaking report, out of England: Hurricane Hector path 2018: Will hurricane hit Oahu and spark another huge eruption? HURRICANE Hector is due to hit Hawaii as the swirling storm is expected to cross the north Pacific this weekend. Currently ranked as a category 3, could the strengthening Hector cause another Hawaiian eruption? Could Hurricane Hector trigger an eruption? The island of Oahu was formed millions of years ago, by the two principle volcanoes Wainae and Koolau. Since the two have erupted, they have gone quiet and are now known as ‘dead’ volcanoes meaning they are highly likely to erupt again. Other, more active spots on Oahu are simple volcanic features which are more likely to erupt. Scientists are at odds over the effects of a hurricane on volcano activity, as low atmospheric pressure is thought to have an impact on eruptions. https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/998865/Hurricane-Hector-path-update-2018-Oahu-Maui-Big-Island-Hawaii-volcano-eruption-kilauea The article was written by Liam Doyle, listed on his Linked In profile as a "Production Journalist." His self described background was in Archaeology, menial duties on the shop floor, and a 17 week journalism course. https://uk.linkedin.com/in/liam-doyle-887779124 RE: Volcano vs Hurricane - Full Coverage? Or... - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 08-04-2018 Here's a similar story from Reuters: Hector vs. Kilauea: Hurricane on track to skirt past Hawaii's erupting volcano (Reuters) - Two of Mother Nature’s most potentially devastating forces - a major hurricane and an erupting volcano - appear headed for a close encounter on Hawaii’s Big Island next week, weather forecasters said on Friday. Hector was on a trajectory that could brush the southern coast of the Big Island late on Wednesday morning, the NHC said. That would put the storm on a virtual collision course with Kilauea Volcano, situated on the southern portion of the island. The volcano is in the midst of a 3-month-old eruption of lava from vents on its eastern flank while its summit crater continues to collapse. Scientists differ over how hurricanes and volcanoes might interact, including the question of whether low atmospheric pressure from a major cyclone could help trigger an eruption, and much remains unknown on the subject. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-hawaii-volcano-hurricane/hector-vs-kilauea-hurricane-on-track-to-skirt-past-hawaiis-erupting-volcano-idUSKBN1KP03P Reuters lists for their report a writer, a contributing writer, and editor, who all follow the goals set down in 1941: "Thomson Reuters is dedicated to upholding the Trust Principles and to preserving its independence, integrity, and freedom from bias in the gathering and dissemination of information and news." I don't know about you, but I notice a substantial difference in the way the two stories are written and presented. I didn't find that they were "all the same," or that they "all do that," or since one was highly inaccurate, it would imply in some way that all media is unreliable. RE: Volcano vs Hurricane - Full Coverage? Or... - PaulW - 08-04-2018 "and are now known as ‘dead’ volcanoes meaning they are highly likely to erupt again" The Daily Express is on a downward spiral. RE: Volcano vs Hurricane - Full Coverage? Or... - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 08-05-2018 terracore discovered and posted this article on the 2018 Hurricane Season thread: "What Would Happen If a Hurricane Hit an Erupting Volcano? A showdown of natural forces could have unanticipated consequences..." https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2017/10/hurricane-vs-volcano/543198/ There are some extraordinary events hypothesized as possible if a hurricane passed over a volcanic eruption, such as the hypercane: Jeff Masters, the meteorology director at Weather Underground, says such an underwater eruption might even spin up something called a hypercane, with winds reaching the speed of sound. It would take “an awful big coincidence” for this to happen, Masters reassures: The volcano would have to be big enough and hot enough to heat hundreds of miles of the ocean’s surface to 122 degrees. Standard weather dynamics would take it from there. “It’s theoretically possible,” Masters says. As clearly stated by a trained meteorologist, and conveyed by the writer, it's extremely unlikely, but theoretically possible. Would a hypercane be possible in Hawaii? Consider the factors required, for instance could underwater seamount Loihi super heat waters south of Big Island, with the hot water then feeding additional energy into a passing hurricane? It might, but again, the possibility is extremely unlikely. The article also includes this comparison between the forces of a hurricane and volcano: It’s unlikely the volcano would make much of a dent in this battle. “As massive as the impact of a volcanic eruption can be, it’s hard to grasp the scale of a hurricane,” says David Nolan, an atmospheric scientist at the University of Miami. “The eye wall of a hurricane typically has a radius of 30 miles. Off the top of my head, I'd say the primary updraft from a volcano is just one mile across.” The writer of the Atlantic article was Jim Nash whose work has also appeared in other reality based publications such as Scientific American, and Wired. The Atlantic Magazine was founded in Boston in 1857 by a group which included Ralph Waldo Emerson, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Harriet Beecher Stowe. They were among the first to publish articles by abolitionists, and later Mark Twain, Frederick Douglass, Albert Einstein, John Muir... https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2017/11/atlantic-authors-160/545120/ RE: Volcano vs Hurricane - Full Coverage? Or... - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 08-06-2018 The latest from Time Magazine: Hurricane Hector Is Barreling Towards Hawaii and Could Hit Near the Erupting Volcano Immediately under the headline is a current map showing the cone south of Big Island. http://time.com/5358498/hurricane-hector-path/ The story was written by their reporter, Ciara Nugent, based in London who seems like a nice, highly educated young woman. From her About Me page: I’m an international reporter for TIME magazine living in London, covering everything outside of the United States.https://ciaranugent.com/about/ Thanks Time Magazine, for publishing like it's 1958, the last time Hawaii was outside the United States. RE: Volcano vs Hurricane - Full Coverage? Or... - PaulW - 08-06-2018 Two mistakes in one headline! RE: Volcano vs Hurricane - Full Coverage? Or... - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 08-07-2018 From NBC News, providing an interesting angle on three intersecting events: Hawaii prepares for election as it grapples with erupting volcano, hurricane HONOLULU — As Hawaii readies for its primary elections, voters are grappling with an erupting volcano and Hurricane Hector. Elections are challenging times for candidates even in the best of circumstances. But Big Island politicians frequently have extra adversity, given they live on top of one of the world's most active volcanoes and in the general vicinity of hurricanes that barrel through the central Pacific Ocean many summers. Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim said officials would be prepared for whatever nature brings. "You accept it. This is nature's way," he said. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/hawaii-prepares-elections-erupting-volcano-hurricane-loom-n898316 “Generalized intelligence and mental alertness are the most powerful enemies of dictatorship and at the same time the basic conditions of effective democracy.” - Aldous Huxley RE: Volcano vs Hurricane - Full Coverage? Or... - geochem - 08-07-2018 You will all be pleased to know that the eruption has "deceased".... May Pele rest in peace??? From my inbox this morning: "This is a Civil Defense message for Tuesday, August 7 at 7:30 in the morning. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports that eruptive activity has deceased at the Kilauea summit and lower east rift eruption from fissure 8." RE: Volcano vs Hurricane - Full Coverage?
