Pohoiki & Mackenzie to reopen - ironyak - 09-05-2018 That's at least what Joy was told http://bigislandnow.com/2018/09/05/pohoiki-mackenzie-to-reopen/ Also a Puna company offered to do the dozing work now to reopen Pohoiki and get paid at a later date and the Mayor declined the offer?! Was mentioned by CD at tonight's community meeting. RE: Pohoiki & Mackenzie to reopen - kimo wires - 09-05-2018 Star Advertiser had this article about people making the 90 minute hike over the new A'a to Pohoiki. I wonder if the county/state has any plan to make better access to pohoiki ? Its pretty rough right now. http://www.staradvertiser.com/2018/09/05/hawaii-news/lava-access-draws-tourists-locals/?HSA=0be4c8c4f64593a589e84906da036dcfe0399ade RE: Pohoiki & Mackenzie to reopen - ElysianWort - 09-06-2018 Wow people are doing it already! I'm making plans now. “To get to Pohoiki is a 2-mile hike, and the first mile is going to be over that a’a flow without a trail or anything, so not everybody can do that.” It bet it will be a little rough in spots, but the longer people wait, the more packed down the a'a will be from previous hikers path. RE: Pohoiki & Mackenzie to reopen - ironyak - 09-06-2018 If you go, try and make sure your car is well off the road. Police have been handing out parking tickets for cars on the road both at Mackenzie and Beach Rd (and DLNR/CD could still issue citations for being on the lava field for what it is worth). RE: Pohoiki & Mackenzie to reopen - Seeb - 09-06-2018 Yea how does that work CD put out a notice that you can’t get within 50 ft of the flow- how are you going to get to the park? And what is the county’s fixation with Pohoiki they jumped thru hoops at the start of th flow to have it open one more day. It kind of shows the Surf Mob has way more influence than a thousand homeowners/ taxpayers RE: Pohoiki & Mackenzie to reopen - ElysianWort - 09-06-2018 Maybe Magno and some others on CD are surfers? RE: Pohoiki & Mackenzie to reopen - MarkD - 09-06-2018 Statement from the Advertiser article: "Magno said legal access to the area is still limited to residents, and state and county authorities will continue to cite any unauthorized people who are caught within the off-limits area." County police, CD, and DLNR have been rousting and citing lava encroachers for months now. Part of their daily routine. Makes them feel big. They'll hang on to the power as long as they can. RE: Pohoiki & Mackenzie to reopen - ironyak - 09-06-2018 Seeb - how are you going to get to the park? You put on some decent hiking gear (I prefer pants tucked into knee-high rubber boots), bring plenty of water, and then place one foot in front of the other, working through the loose 'a'a piles, and repeat about 3000 times. Stay near to the paths others have made and keep inside the road's boundaries to avoid crossing private property. There are a couple kipuka along the way to help orient where the road is at so you end up on it for the second half. In short, understand the risks, plan for them, and take your chances if you are so inclined. RE: Pohoiki & Mackenzie to reopen - ironyak - 09-07-2018 Official word for plans to reopen (timeline unclear) http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/2018/09/07/hawaii-news/county-preps-to-reopen-isaac-hale/ RE: Pohoiki & Mackenzie to reopen - MarkD - 09-07-2018 This map--I think it's accurate--shows an interesting hike to Pohoiki: a stretch of lava, a section of road, a short stretch of lava, another stretch of road, and then a pretty long stretch of lava. And then about a mile on the road to reach the beach.
