This is definitely related to Chunksters topic: Hawaii Economy or lack thereof but felt it needed it's own thread. As long as this trend continues, and it has been in the bottom ten of states as long as I can remember from now to small-kid-time, the ENTIRE rest of the state and economy will suffer.

The trade-off of living here. A state but a lot like a third world country.

The legislature should fund performance based bonuses for current teachers, and enticements to recruit seasoned mainland teachers. Start eliminating the bottom 10% of teachers every school year. Seeing good performance rewarded and bad punished will encourage the kind of teachers we want.

The ballot initiative may be well meaning, but is too vague. Note that it does not specify that existing funding from the state won't be removed when the new taxes are in place. Note that there is no tax percentage or definition of investment specified. Note that the backers of the initiative have had plenty of time and feedback to update or clarify the wording, but are choosing not to.

Start eliminating the bottom 10% of administrative overhead every hear -- and not just in education.

Yes, that's intentional.

the thing about Hawai'i is that it was a territory for a long time. That's why it barely feels like a state, lol. Go check out Puerto Rico!

Aloha Smile

I would only add, "And don't replace them."

North Dakota is in the top 5 states for teachers. Anyone interested in moving? In theory it's convenient to say, dump the bottom 10% of the teachers. I was, and am again, a teacher. I understand tenure...for higher level grades. A controversial college history teacher (some may remember UH's "commie," Oliver Lee) brings value to a university. Elementary school teachers do not need tenure. The union also shields incompetence and laziness. Teachers should be paid a lot more and they should earn it. Just like employees everywhere. Not here, though. The unions pull the strings and our legislators dance.

The union also shields incompetence and laziness.

This problem is not specific to education.

Here they just let the work pile up and tell everyone it's because they're so understaffed.
