Lava magma reinflating in lerz? - dan d - 10-10-2018

Deformation down at summit and up in lerz,or more scare tactics?
What u think glinda?

For a while after Puu Leilani shut down it was hard to discern just what was happening instrumentally. Things remained pretty flat, as if there is a very broad area that might be slowly inflating or deflating but it is so broad as to render any small movement of magma insignificant when looked at through the eyes of the instrumentation on the volcano's surface. More recently a familiar pattern began to emerge where the summit appears to be once again deflating while the area around Puu Oo is inflating. You can see this here:

https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/vsc/captures/kilauea/summit_erz_tilt_month.png

Where one month of deformation at the two stations shows they both became active around September 18 or 19th and have continued, one going up and the other down at about the same rate, ever since. Note that the daily cycle, those little ups and downs that appear regularly each day on the plot, is the Earth warming and cooling. And now, in the last few days, it appears they may be slowing down.

The odd thing is that a tilt station further east, between Oo and Leilani, is not sympathetic to Puu Oo but rather continues to show deflation. This might suggest there is a blockage preventing magma from getting into the lower reaches of the rift, but with so few data points, and the fact that we've only seen about 8 microradians of change overall, I've felt we have a while before any of this will amount to something that would trigger another eruptive event. But yes, the mountain is showing some, albeit small, signs of reawakening.

don't know if it means anything, but when I drive in to work from North Hilo district, I have a perfect view of Kilauea as I enter Peepekeo. For the last 2 days there is a large plume....not seen that in months!

USGS Current Alerts says "Deformation signals are consistent with refilling of the middle East Rift Zone." Similar comments for weeks. I don't see much discussion on this topic. Is everyone getting all nice and comfortable? Mauna Loa saw some pretty busy seismic activity late September/1st half of October but USGS said nothing until November about it - - after it calmed down. It seems like everyone is just pretending it is all over now, forgetting activity can start back up any time from one volcano or another. I am not paranoid, but this last eruption had plenty of surprises. Seismic activity (on the low end) continues in LERZ and south flank daily. Worth watching. https://earthquaketrack.com/us-hi-hilo/recent . Also noticing that more and more of Pahala's regular quakes are much shallower than they have been in the past. Thoughts?

From what USGS has shared with us up in Volcano, the refilling of the LERZ/ MERZ is expected and essentially “normal” volcanic behavior after a large output of lava from the storage chambers under Kilauea. The concern is that down in the LERZ, it is unknown why the eruption ceased...did a lava chamber collapse and creat a blockage...did the lava chambers in LERZ decrease to the amount below the lava tubes that feed Fissure 8 so it is a pause. No one knows for sure if this is Pau yet. The refilling of the LERZ/ MERZ is normal so perhaps that is why there has not been much press about it.

If that was really true (HAHAHAHA), that land just got a lot more valuable.
