Strange Goin's On - 1voyager1 - 11-08-2018 There does seem to be something strange going on in the area with the vegetation and other things: not flowering, or flowering prolifically out of season, and similar from several scattered post here on PW. I'm also including the Hummingbird Moth showing up as part of this. They seem to cover areas not likely to be directly affected by the eruption as well as some that were. I'm also noticing similar and other anomalies here in "directly affected land". My Lamb-Hass avo's are ripening in a not necessarily organized manner. I've had a couple of the fruit begin turning dark and drop from the tree. The first one a few days ago was not seen at first and might have been on the ground for a while. It did turn bad. One dropped today and has been brought in to see how it fares. It was turning dark more evenly than the first. My feeling is that while it is small, as all the fruit on that tree are, it will ripen satisfactorily. I'll know in the next few days. I will be watching the tree very closely to see what the remaining fruit do. This avo cultivar should not begin ripening until early next summer. Our cat are catching very small rats. They look more like runty mice than rats. That may be due to my rat poisoning program now in effect. The mother's maybe being killed and the young maybe forced out of the nest much sooner than normal. Am I turning into a "flying saucer nut" or are others seeing similar? RE: Strange Goin's On - ElysianWort - 11-09-2018 flowering prolifically out of season That's news to me. We have seasons?? Also if you know there is active poisonings, be sure to not let your cats eat the poisoned rats. (if possible) I like flying saucers. Tell me more. Which direction to look? I don't know about the rest of you guys but I'm certain we don't live alone in this multiverse. We share it. Just because our scientists don't see it doesn't mean they don't exist. RE: Strange Goin's On - Carey - 11-09-2018 I do know that there is some speculation that honeybee populations may have been affected by the eruption & VOG (USDA has been querying beekeepers) I have heard a lot of incidental speculation on the fruits that normally flower from May-August being affected this year from Hamakua through to Kona... Of course, we have also had a lot of tropical storms from late spring till now...so... there is that to add into the speculation... For us, our tangerine, which normally is loaded with hundreds of tangerines has 2.... that`s right, I counted both of `em.... tangerines... & hundreds of thousands of pollinators right by it, yet neighbors have tangerine trees with tangerines...so.... & YES EW, there are seasonal fruiting schedules for many of the plants in the tropics (try to get a homegrown local white pineapple in February, or a bag of locally grown sweet navel oranges in May!) THINK of all of the localy grown fruit that normally is available only during a few months! RE: Strange Goin's On - ElysianWort - 11-09-2018 Yup true Carey. I realize the harvesting seasons. Maybe 3 or 4 sometimes for certain plants and trees. I consistently get a few stray fruit out of season every year too. Seems to fluctuate with the weather quite a bit though. I guess that is normal. RE: Strange Goin's On - shave_ice - 11-09-2018 I definitely think vegetation has been affected. My wurtz avocado starting dropping its avos much earlier than usual and they don't taste as good. My wild jungle avocado trees have started dropping much smaller fruit than usual and they also don't taste as good. Kind of watery, bland flavor compared to previous years. My orange and tangerine trees have little to no fruit. I think some trees just took a hit harder than others, but they will bounce back now that things are back to normal. I've recently noticed that some kind of borer is infecting my avocado, lychee, lime, and soursop trees. I've never seen this in the 6+ years that I've been here. I don't know if this related or what, but I am concerned about that. On the flip side, my pink variegated lemon tree is producing like bonkers as usual. It didn't slow down at all. And I have a tree gardenia that has produced seed pods that I've never seen before. Maybe from all the hummingbird moths that showed up this year. RE: Strange Goin's On - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 11-09-2018 don't taste as good. Kind of watery, bland flavor Too much precipitation can adversary affect flavor in fruits and vegetables, and we did have 50 inches of rain from Hurricane Lane last summer. RE: Strange Goin's On - ElysianWort - 11-09-2018 Hurricane Lane dumped a whopping amount on us and it hasn't really stopped. Also before Lane the Leilani Volcano made it's own weather pattern and attracted rain clouds. One of the wettest years I can remember in awhile. RE: Strange Goin's On - Durian Fiend - 11-09-2018 quote: Pretty much, yeah, and I agree that things are messed up this year. Probably due to all of the rain. Got some good avocados recently though. [] RE: Strange Goin's On - 1voyager1 - 11-10-2018 Just ate that Lamb-Hass avo that dropped a couple of days ago. It was good, but small. It should not had ripened until next summer. I will be watching the tree closely to see what what's going on with it. @EW Yes, we definitely have seasons, summer, winter, and maybe spring. Autumn is a bit harder to pin down. RE: Strange Goin's On - kalianna - 11-10-2018 Auutumn is when we only have to mow the grass every 8 days instead of once a week. [] |
