This kind of says it all:

Parking is available for purchase in green marked stalls in Varney Circle and behind Kennedy Theatre or in the main parking structure off of Dole Street.

Here are the two leaders of the press conference, or at least two of the leaders interviewed in the article:

Political Science Department Chair, Noelani Goodyear-Ka#699;#333;pua.
“We cannot send the message that arresting community, students and faculty is an acceptable cost of research.”

Hawaiian Studies Department Chair, Konia Freitas.
“The policy and practice of UH must begin to prioritize the protection of the Mauna’s natural and cultural resources, respect the protectors and Native Hawaiian cultural practitioners...

So, two of their concerns are that:
1) People breaking the law should not be arrested, from the point of view of someone who works in the area of Political Science
2) Respect protectors and cultural practitioners. Isn't this addressed and agreed upon in the Hawaii Supreme Court ruling? Thoroughly addressed in the 73 page ruling?

I hope people at the press conference ask them (and others?) to expand on their comments, and are allowed followup questions.

"I want great climate, we’re going to have that.” President Donald J. Trump, while viewing the massive wildfire devastation 11/17/18. (The J stands for Jenius)

Isn't this addressed and agreed upon in the Hawaii Supreme Court ruling?

For the pro-TMT side, "respect" means "sharing so that all cultures may participate".

To the anti-TMT folks, "respect" means "all of you haoles have to get off our sacred mountain".

RE: Anti tmt rally uh dec 5 noon - TomK - 12-04-2018

I don't think there will be many people from the IfA or the observatories there. I suspect the message from that is "dig your own grave". I will, however, be interested to see if some incisive questions are asked by local journalists and whether the answers match the questions.

Interesting poll results from the Star. Granted, in order to vote, one must be a subscriber of the papar.

What do you think about Wednesday’s protest against the Thirty Meter Telescope held at UH Manoa?

Bad: 684
Good: 42
Mixed/Neutral: 34

100 people showed up.
One of the organizers said:

“There is absolutely no way they would approve a research project where I said, well in order for me to do my research its going to result in substantial protest among the community living where I’m doing my research and its also potentially going to result in their arrest, it may result in psychological harm, it may result in their financial lost,” says Goodyear-Ka#699;#333;pua, “There is no way that that would fly.”

The reality is it did not "result in substantial protest among the community". 100 people protesting at a university with a student population of 17,612 is not "substantial." I wish at some point the statements of the protestors would match the reality in front of their eyes.

Opponents have squeezed every last drop of legal action out of the situation. They had a fair hearing. Everyone in the state heard their concerns, which were addressed in the Supreme Court ruling. Neither side gets 100% of what they want, but everybody gets something. The glass is half full for all of us.

Realy good quote from the UH spokesman :

Asked whether the University would even consider terminating the project, UH Spokesman Dan Meisenzahl says...

“It’s a hard question to answer because the fact of the matter is this ship has sailed."

Having worked in Hilo with many people of Hawaiian ancestry, I did not come across a single person that respected the protesters or opposed the TMT. People have jobs and kids and bills to pay and do not care about any of this. I know two folks in Puna opposed to the TMT: Neither is Hawaiian, one is an herb dealer that's been caught more than once, and the other is in the country illegally and has been pulled over for driving without license on expired tags.
