Government Shutdown Halts Lava Recovery Efforts - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 01-17-2019 Now it’s personal. It’s not just Hawaii Volcanoes National Park affected by the government shutdown, its recovery efforts in lower Puna, and help for displaced residents: “The people who answer our questions aren’t working anymore. The people processing the grants that are needed are not working anymore," said Thomas Travis, administrator of the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency. “As time goes on, the shutdown will have an increasing negative effect on the people of Hawaii and we’re starting to feel some of those things now.” Big Island Civil Defense chief Talmadge Magno said one the county’s key FEMA grant applications is being held up. The grant will allow emergency officials to re-interview 700 residents who were initially displaced by the lava. He said millions of dollars in federal housing aid could be at risk if the survey isn’t done. http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2019/01/17/government-shutdown-is-slowing-hawaii-islands-eruption-recovery/ Call Mazie. Call Brian. Call Tulsi. They’re all working nonstop to reopen the government. Tell them thank you for their efforts. We were battered by natural disasters of all types last year on nearly all of our islands – from major flooding and landslides on #Kauai and #Oahu in April, an erupting volcano throughout May and June, and flooding and wildfires on multiple islands in August. - Tulsi Gabbard 1/16/19 We cannot turn our backs on our brothers and sisters. Look at how many in Hawaii alone are federal employees. Think of all their unpayed bills, all the businesses they are not frequenting, etc... At this point the country is being held hostage to the pride (and re-election hopes) of both sides. It has nothing to do with saving money. |
