Nova: Hawaii on Fire - Lodestone - 01-25-2019 This week's episode of Nova examines our summer of fun with Fissure 8. Highly recommended. https://www.pbs.org/video/kilauea-hawaii-on-fire-9wv2dd/ RE: Nova: Hawaii on Fire - bananahead - 01-25-2019 easily the best info program made so far on our volcano events of the last 1 year in Puna here... NOVA was so good in explaining stuff, it may have convinced a few retarded conspiracy kook that PGV actually didnt cause the eruptions! lol ****************************************************************** save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha RE: Nova: Hawaii on Fire - SoCal_to_Hawaii - 01-25-2019 Thank you for the link Lodestone. It was well worth watching. RE: Nova: Hawaii on Fire - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 01-25-2019 Yes, thanks Lodestone. I’m watching it on the Roku PBS app right now. Even video I saw during the eruption assumes a new level of tension when viewed on the big screen, and brings back the suspense we felt last summer. The nighttime drone rescue of a lost resident with a flashlight walking to escape the lava was something. We're not considering anything, but all options are on the table. - President Donald J. Trump 1/24/19 RE: Nova: Hawaii on Fire - JamesZ - 01-25-2019 At 36:42, in the lower left of the screen, something seems to arise from the edge of the lava river and run along it for a brief time before the scene cuts out. What could that be? Jamesz RE: Nova: Hawaii on Fire - Chunkster - 01-25-2019 Thanks, Lodestone. It is a very good documentary overall, and I particularly appreciated the way they made the science accurate, but understandable for non-experts. I did notice two interesting things I think are worth commenting on: First, they did not have Talmadge Magno giving the Civil Defense angle, but rather a more articulate and personable gentleman whom I admired. Left me wondering if they filmed Magno and left his footage on the cutting room floor or if someone told them not to bother even talking to him. Could that someone have been higher ups at the county? Some might say they made CD look better or nicer than they actually were, but at least they had somebody coherent in front of the camera who didn't look like a grinning idiot. Second, while it is certainly not a fatal omission, they did not even mention the two large earthquakes that hit us in the earliest phase of the eruption. How do you miss a 6.9 earthquake? For many of us, that was a very dramatic and traumatic kickoff to the following weeks of hell. They did, however, describe the swarms of smaller earthquakes that moved down the rift in an effective manner. I have sent the link to a number of friends, and they all agree with me that the movie is quite good. RE: Nova: Hawaii on Fire - TomK - 01-25-2019 Jamesz - looked like a top of a tree to me. Chunkster - interesting observations. Couple of comments from me: 1) We don't know if the Nova team even bothered to contact Magno but if they did, I wouldn't be surprised if they dropped it. Magno's appearance would have ruined the documentary, IMO, and suspect the filmmakers knew that. 2) I agree it was a good documentary but the fact they ignored the two large earthquakes that seemed to trigger the eruption in the Leilani area was surprising. They showed what I think was a video filmed during the 6.9-mag in the introduction but it was never mentioned again. In the past, I've mentioned Nova is very good at explaining science but when you watch a show that is about a subject you know about, then you realize they miss out a lot of stuff and sometimes just get details completely wrong. It doesn't matter to the layperson but annoys the expert. In a way, everyone in Puna now has that same experience whether they are experts or not. RE: Nova: Hawaii on Fire - Chas - 01-26-2019 Did it seem like the HVO people said a lot of “We knew that X was going to happen because of Y”? For instance, they analyzed the initial lava and realized it wasn’t the lava that drained from Halemaumau so they knew the next lava would be more fluid, etc. Did they make these “predictions” at the time it was happening? RE: Nova: Hawaii on Fire - Carey - 01-26-2019 We were at VAC on Thurs for the "Tales from Kilauea" talk story, & the Nova documentary was a topic of conversation... They definitely had a lot more hours (weeks) of interviews & film footage than made the one hour cut, much more on so many aspects of the whole eruption, but for the actual Nova format, the clips were what they chose (& yes Bill Hanson is far more articulate that TM. I never did understand why they had TM as spokesperson for CD when he was sooo uncomfortable moderating the updates- both looking, himself & for the audience!) Some of us plant & wildlife geeks all noticed we cringed when, in showing the wildlife returning there were clips of a red parrot & the forest returning was an opening plumeria blossom.... Over all interesting but far less than the total.... for sure, as it was just one hour to cram sooo much & keep the "edge of the seat" feel for channel surfers... Far more interesting for those of us that lived through it, might be Harry Durgin & John Stallmans presentation "Volcano" on Wed night, Feb. 13 at the Palace Theater in Hilo (it was last night at Aloha Theater) http://hilopalace.com/hpt_event/volcano/ & it is so sad that most of the Volcano Awareness month programs produced by Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park and the Hawai`i Volcanoes Observatory were cancelled due to the government shutdown.... hopefully they can reschedule the month! ETA This is one Volcano Awareness Program to survive, THIS MONDAY & TUESDAY 1/28 7pm & 1/29 3pm Kiauea’s Eruption of 2018: Perspectives from History and the field @ Lyman Museum: http://lymanmuseum.org/events/ ETAII (Sorry, just found out here are still ON!): Also the 1/31 talk at UH Hilo 7pm "Role of Drones during Kilauea 2018 eruption" https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/vsc/file_mngr/file-200/Talks_2019%20VAM.pdf RE: Nova: Hawaii on Fire - Chas - 01-26-2019 Thanks Carey! You’re the best! |
