Vet for dogs - planecharlie - 01-27-2019

My wife will be picking up her new puppy next week. Any suggestions from the group about veterinarians? We live in Pahoa, willing to travel a reasonable amount.
Thank you

If Hilo works for you, we have had good quality of care and prompt response to out of hours emergencies at Maika'i Vet, 959-2273. They are in the outlying building between the mall and WalMart. If you do go with someone else, be sure to ask about weekend and after hours emergency service. A surprising number of local vets have no such arrangements at all, and you are on your own if something happens outside 9-5.

Good advice from Chunkster, regardless of where you go you need to have the animal seen somewhere that has emergency service if your primary vet doesn't have emergency service. Most of the vets that do emergency after hours/weekends etc only do for existing clients.

Does anybody know which vet is moving into the new clinic they are opening in the new Pahoa mall?

We are also with Maika`i Vet, mainly because we had used a single vet practice early on & over the Holidays, that vet & a couple others were on Holiday, we had a need for a vet & NO ONE seemed to be able to take us in with the increased patient load, except the now-named Maika`i....
I would suggest to establish billing with a couple of vets in the area, unless you are planning on going to a multi-vet practice (even then it is not a bad idea... never can tell when you may need it, & pets can have issues at the least convenient times...)

My wife and I have used Big Island Pet Care center on 28th st in Keaau. I have going in with my dog many times due to the medications she requires. The staff is incredibly wonderful and caring. I could go on and on but you get the idea.

You certainly can’t go wrong with them in my opinion.

I prefer Aloha Vet in Hilo - great doctors, good prices, well known. Only drawback is they can get busy.

Been going there with all my dogs for 5 years now. Doctor Rodriguez did my Aglility dog's knee (dog version of ACL) surgery with great success. Emergency service available at extra cost (fair) when needed.
