Pu'u O'o remains quiet, and according to a new report may not erupt again, rather lava is moving into the middle ERZ:
Statistically, after a 210 day (7 month) gap in activity, it is extremely unlikely that lava will resume activity within Pu#699;u #699;#332;#699;#333;. Based on historical knowledge of rift zone eruptions, pauses lasting more than 3½ months have ended their respective eruption.
This does not mean K#299;lauea Volcano is dead. New eruptions have previously begun elsewhere on K#299;lauea after months to decades of quiet. Magma is being supplied to the volcano, and deformation data shows evidence for movement of molten rock through the magmatic system, refilling the middle ERZ.

If Pu'u O'o gets cooled off enough to plug up. And the LRZ gets cooled off enough.... It stands to reason somewhere between Pu'u O'o and the LRZ there will be a release. I'd be watching Pu'u O'o to hwy 130. Someone once said " I've got a bad feeling about this."

Does this mean the hike from the end of Capitain (?) Rd down to Pu'u O'o is safe again? No gasses? It was a gorgeous hike (not to conflate your two topics, but) through the jungle. I did it before I realized it was a danger. Would love to try again!
