RE: Hawaii Island Meat Coop 1st Annual Meeting 3/24/19 - kalakoa - 02-08-2019

The mobile slaughterhouse sounded like a good idea, but it's not quite useful to smaller small producers. I'm left wondering if HIMC didn't crunch the numbers, or if they just didn't care.

While a mobile slaughterhouse operated by the Hawaii Island Meat Cooperative is periodically available, Carroll said she would have to slaughter about half of her flock for that option to be financially viable. ... Carroll said if she cannot find a place to slaughter her lambs soon, she might have to stop raising the animals altogether.

If anybody is interested in reading the USDA letters against Kulana they are here (scroll down to Kulana).

Except for Kulana beef and chicken via Puna Chicks, all the meat consumed on this island now has to be imported, unless you raise it yourself or get it off the black market. The mobile slaughterhouse might supply a small amount, but I've never seen their stuff for sale. I think a lot of it is consumed by the owners of the animals.
