It does seem hard to believe that in Hilo we pay more than in Noo Yawk, Frisco, and Bastin. I have not purchased food in Hana.

When I lived on Maui, the Pukalani Foodland sold a pack of 40 paper coffee filters for over $4.00. I asked someone in the store - - how can PAPER cost so much? They gave the Hawaii retail auto-reply, ooohhhhh shipping costs brah.
Costco opened in Kahului.
They sold 300 paper coffee filters for $3.00.
Shipping costs. Right.

Maybe they were only shopping at Safeway and Island Naturals? The food is a lot cheaper here than most of Alaska or Manhattan plus most people have the option of growing/harvesting their own.
According to this article, "NYC has the highest grocery prices, followed by Seattle and SF, but various cities around the country held the most expensive prices for many common grocery items."

I had previously posted elsewhere, I frequently find groceries cheaper at an Orchidland hardware store versus comparable items from Safeway.

If you are into surfing prices just go to a grocery stores website and look at their sales flyer for whatever zip code you want. It is a fun pastime .
