Garage sale - advice - rbakker - 04-19-2019 Aloha! We're planning to have a garage sale in HPP next weekend, first time we've done it. Does anyone have some advice, e.g. how to advertise it? I was thinking of nailing cardboard signs with "GARAGE SALE" and the dates and an arrow on every few posts on Makuu (we will remove them immediately afterwards). I will advertise on the craigslist garage sale section and here in the Punaweb non-classifieds section. Any other tips? I will be careful not to let strangers wander into my house! mahalo! RE: Garage sale - advice - terracore - 04-19-2019 If you advertise it ahead of time (which you probably should) be aware that people will show up hours before your advertised start-up time hoping to catch you taking your stuff out and getting it ready for sale, looking for specific bargains to low-ball you on. So get the sale ready the evening before. If your primary goal is to get rid of stuff, mark your prices down 50% half way through your sale, and then list everything for free 3/4 the way through. We stop at a lot of sales, and most of the stuff is junk. I've seen people trying to sell rusty cookie sheets for roughly what it costs to buy a new one. That is just an example, but the general theme in Puna is that people are trying to sell stuff that in other neighborhoods people would pay others to haul away. RE: Garage sale - advice - rbakker - 04-19-2019 Thanks for the tips terracore! I think our prices will be very reasonable and I'll watch our for the early birds trying to catch the early worms. Here is a link for our sales on craigslist: http://www.punaweb.org/Forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=26109 The prices are: King bed set $350 Electric fireplace $50 Rattan dining set $800 Magnavox TV $30 Bamboo table $300 Pier lamps and bamboo side tables $140 Teak rocking chair $100 Teak chair $100 Bedside furniture and lamp ($90). Palm leaf floor lamp $70 Coffee table / entertainment stand $120 Unique coffee table / end table $100 Rattan round chairs and coffee table set $400 Mama-san chair $60 mahalo! RE: Garage sale - advice - terracore - 04-19-2019 It looks like you have quality stuff. Some pictures of 3-4 best items might generate some excitement on a CL ad. If the Magnavox TV isn't a true flatscreen, $30 is closer to a disposal fee. Just FYI. RE: Garage sale - advice - kalianna - 04-19-2019 I would second the early bird problem and include on both signs and CL ad, "Absolutely no earlybirds". Marking prices right on the items will help avoid needless conversations with creepy people even if you're wiliing to negotiate the price. And post this on the Punaweb classified page too. Sounds like more than the usual rusty cookie sheet type items. RE: Garage sale - advice - glinda - 04-19-2019 I would second the early bird problem From my experience I have concluded that early birders are professional garage sale people looking for stuff to stock their own garage sales with. RE: Garage sale - advice - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 04-19-2019 Sign on driveway: ______________________________ EARLY BIRD SPECIAL Entrance Fee Before Sale Begins - $5 All Sales Prior To Starting Time Double Price Marked ______________________________ RE: Garage sale - advice - dan d - 04-20-2019 Dont be surprised no one buys the more expensibe stuf. We all broke here. Same goes for sellin at hpp ,no one has money HPP RE: Garage sale - advice - PaulW - 04-20-2019 "We all broke here" Lots of high house prices in HPP lately, and not just along the coast. If you can, you might want to have your garage sale on the 2nd Saturday of the month, when the HPP Swap Meet is. A lot of people have garage sales then. RE: Garage sale - advice - kalakoa - 04-20-2019 Taking your garage sale on the road (community center, Makuu market, etc) is more work but it keeps the stalkers/creeps/thieves from knowing where you live -- after all, if this is what you're getting rid of, the stuff inside your house must be way nicer. |
