Fuschia’s? - Ccat - 04-20-2019 (I know that fuschias are an imported plant. Are they illegal?) I’d love to have baskets of fuschias hanging from the eaves of my house. Where can I get some plants or cuttings? Thanks. RE: Fuschia’s? - bananahead - 04-21-2019 Fuchsia magellanica is a very bad invasive species in Hawaii, and they have introduced vectors to control it in the volcano area... thats why the leaves on most all the plants in upper Puna have that crinkly mite bitten look.... http://hear.org/species/fuchsia_magellanica/ ****************************************************************** save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha RE: Fuschia’s? - ElysianWort - 04-21-2019 I grew a Bolivian Fuschia that took hold at a friends up in Volcano village I didn't have any luck down here in Kurtistown. It produced and pretty flower and a delicious tiny berry-like fruit. Looked like a tiny white/pink cucumber but tasted like an exotic sweet little treat. I recommend it. RE: Fuschia’s? - Ccat - 04-23-2019 I was thinking of the hybrid type of fuschia that you see used in hanging baskets. I suspect they are started from cuttings. A big concern would be insects and critters (coqui, lizards, etc.) that might take up residence in the basket. Thanks for the thoughtful replies. RE: Fuschia’s? - Ccat - 04-23-2019 Update: fuchsia plants are highly subject to fungal diseases in the Puna district. I am abandoning the idea. |
