Tax shaming - EightFingers - 04-29-2019
Got some info from State of Hawaii dept of taxation that included a blurb that basically said they are now publishing the names and amounts due of delinquent accounts on a public website.
I’m thinking they better make sure their information is correct, I can see the lawyers circling already.
Anyway, Is this something new? New strategy to collect unpaid taxes?

They must be short of funds.
The last time I filed it took the state 4 months to send a refund. The due date for my subsequent quarterly payment had already passed.
At least the federal government can print more money when they owe me a refund, I usually receive their direct deposit in a matter of days.

They are pulling out all the stops to bleed every last drop out of every last taxpayer due to the rail budget shortfall. A friend of mine in HNL was audited on some GET taxes he paid many years ago and they wound up stealing over $5k from him because he no longer had the records (long story involving a divorce and losing half his stuff).
Of course, none of it would have happened if he was "under the table". He wound up permanently closing his business during the audit.
Publishing the names and amounts is a common practice elsewhere, I don't know that it's ever been effective. Maybe they should require them to wear the amount they owe in big scarlet numerals on their chest, and they can raise their past due tax amounts begging for donations at stoplights. In other states, the hobos beg for money and ride the trains. Here the hobos will have to beg for money to finance the trains.

We always over pay our quarterly taxes by 37 dollars and 97 cents. It really screws up their computerized accounting and can take them over a year to give us a refund.
Last year we did this only once- and over paid 127.97 and just last week a refund check came in the USPS for $230.00 for a profit of $ 122 and change .
Out smarting the taxation computerized department on Oahu is sort of fun and a way to mess with the system .

I especially enjoy the part where the entire State must "pay their fair share" for rail that doesn't exist on neighbor islands.
As with PCDP, it will be years before we find out it wasn't a good deal.

I pay a tiedown fee on a plane at ITO. I just straightened out a SNAFU with DOT Airports where they were sending nastygrams from the Attorney General because THEY had somehow failed to credit us for payments made. Sent them the cancelled check and they graciously closed the case.
Not the first time either. Once went into the main office at HNL and gave them a check for like @280. Still had problems after that. Eventually found out that they had started a new account with that money where it sat for months. Meanwhile they continued to piss and moan about "where's our money".

Yesterday we received a letter stating we owed them a whopping 7 cents as in 7 pennies .
so we went our bank and got a cashiers check for $ 97.97 to an address in Seattle . WE sent the $ 97.97 via certify check with return receipt for our own records .
They now are based in the Philippines to save money but as we have discovered - their new computerized system can not handle the numbers 7 or 9.
All over a whopping SEVEN cents we owe the state.
2 can play this game of save the state money by going off shore to save money.All over seven pennies they say we owe them.

At one time, I owed .89. The person at the tax office said they write off amounts less than $1.

That's nothing, once we accidentally underpaid HELCO by two cents and they charged us a $16 late fee. Their collection letter demanded $16.02 payment due on the 8th of the month, but it was postmarked on the 16th of the same month, 100% guaranteeing there would be no way we could pay it without a time machine.
