Pohoiki harbor water: toxic? - Peter Easterling - 05-20-2019

The former tiny harbor at Pohoiki is now a turgid pond. There is a warning sign, though nothing definitive or official. People still enter the water. Is it tested and, if so, where are the results? Often one of you good Puna folks has this sort of information (Carey?) And I shall try to find out myself and try to remember to post the results on this string

The former tiny harbor at Pohoiki is now a turgid pond.

We probably wouldn't know this without road access.

I swim there every Sunday morning.
There is water coming in from the bottom in places.
Really hot days it gets algae but as soon as it rains, it's gone.

It would be a good project for the UHH kids to do. Put some dye in the water and see if it or how long it takes to dissipate. And or do a bacteria count.

Why isn't that a classroom project.

As an afterthought if UHH ain't teaching earth science in the arguably easiest lab to practice in/on ... what do they teach these future Walmart checkers there.,( and I dont mean that in a disrespectful way.)

East Hawaii used to have regularly tested & reported beaches on the water quality data page, Pohoiki Boat Ramp was/is sample site 001127.

The regular testing of East Hawaii beaches all changed a couple of years ago, Hawaii established the "Beach Monitoring Program" with a "Tier Level " way of prioritizing beaches, and as of 2017, only 11 beaches in our county, all Kona side, are on the "Tier 1" testing mandate, so only those now are on the regular reported water quality ( BMP: https://health.hawaii.gov/cwb/files/2017/05/Hawaii-Beach-Monitoring-Program-170508.pdf )

The regular water quality data that is now taken is still available through the DOH Clean Water Branch:
http://cwb.doh.hawaii.gov/CleanWaterBranch/WaterQualityData/default.aspx

ETA: add the location "001127" in front of "Location" for the very old data for 001127:

"turgid" isn't exactly the right word here. Maybe turbid (stagnant). Both words can be linked, though. The man in a turgid condition alleviated it by jumping into a turbid freezing pond.

Language fun on Punatalk. After I learned disintermediation.

About a month after the opening I asked a lifeguard if the water in the ponds had been tested. He said that it had been tested but no one ever told them the results of the test. The second warm pond, up against the trees appears to have high tide marks and that was good enough to get me in. No body parts have been lost so far and I figure if anything bad had happened we would have heard about it by now. Perhaps this isn't perfect logic but man, that calm warm water sure feels good.

Go just beyond the tree line and go into the spring fed warm pool.

the fresh water lens (Lens hydrology) that comes to surface at shore will help (hot pond), same with the salt water seepage from ocean.. salt kills some germs too...
IMO not any more 'gross' than swimmin in ANY tidal pool... and far far cleaner than getting in that crap with lepto ie Waipio ponds, ...and the worst spot, Waimea rivermouth Oahu when they open the sand bar and that idiot Kelly Slater shows everyone how to get lepto the easiest way in HI.... aloha

rat lungworm ~ pfft....
Leptospirosis kills a person in Hawaii every 3 yrs on average (33 deaths in 100 yrs)

save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha

Have you ever looked up the definition of bananahead?

bananahead
An insult; basically calling someone a bananahead is similar to calling them an idiot or a moron.”
