"expired" propane tanks ? - terracore - 07-06-2019

I got our propane tanks filled today at Maku'u and the filler marked a black "X" on my tanks and told me they were expired. She said she would fill them this time but now they were marked and they wouldn't fill them again.

"Expired? What does that mean?" I asked. She went onto explain that the tanks were stamped with a manufacture date and they were good for 10 years, and they were expired. She told me the 20 pound tank could be exchanged at any place that does tank exchanges, including there, but she didn't know any place that exchanged the larger ones. My other tank is 40#.

Preliminary interweb search sort of told me the same thing, except it said 12 years and that the tanks could get recertified for 5 years beyond that.

Both my tanks are older than 12 years, and I don't recall anybody ever even looking at the date stamp before. I don't mind exchanging the 20# pound (it is itself an exchanged tank) but I don't want to buy a new 40# tank because there is nothing wrong with the one I have.

My plan is to wipe off the black X's she drew on the tanks and go somewhere else for the next refill, but has anybody else heard of this? My tanks are in good shape, not rusty or anything, have always been kept inside covered/sheltered lanai etc.

The expiration used to be 12 years. Both of my 100# tanks expired 2 years ago and they spotted it right now.

The state recently (2017) changed the expiration from 12 years to 10 years. You can get the tank hydro tested for recertification, where they take off the top, fill tank with water, and pressurize. If the tank is weak and explodes it won’t injure anyone when filled with water. Then they empty out the water, dry the inside, and replace the top.

Some of these laws were put in place 25 years ago (or so) after a propane filler on Maui died. The rusted valve on top blew off and struck him in the head. A particularly gruesome incident for all involved.

Well I guess I'm done with the 40 pound tanks. Two 20's cost less and can be exchanged for unexpired tanks.

Didin't know about the tanks haveing an expiration date. Did know that, owners need to keep the rust under control. Sand and repaint I figure. Aluminum tanks won't rust, but cost WAY more to buy.

I think the fire extinguisher guy in Shipman does hydro testing.

When mine were overly rusty about one-year away from expiration I just went and did the propane exchange at Home Depot and the employee let me pick out two cylinders that were about six months old. I suppose there is no exchange for the larger tanks. I use it for water heating and stove so I get a bit more than two weeks per tank but it might be nice to only go once a month for a fill.

Dan is that tank shared between water heater and stove, or do you go through a whole tank just for 2 weeks of water heating? Big ohana? We get 2 months of 2 showers a day on our Ecotemp L5. You might be able to save some water and propane with a water conserving shower head...

Yea, the propane is shared with the water heater and the stove. Just two adults here so the 20 lb tank lasts 16 to 20 days depending on use (showers / wash-loads /oven.) I'm planning on putting in a tankless at some point. I had use of one at a previous place -- had both an indoor and outdoor shower.

The always on feature is nice, though I once got lulled into 45 minute-ish outdoor shower while it was raining heavily. The contrast was nice.

I wonder what the response would be if you marked their tanks up.
