Ant control - LFAs, Crazy Ants, or whatever else - 1voyager1 - 07-26-2019

Way before the eruption I had cleared out the LFAs from our property using the Ant Lab's Tango recipe.
In way over a year we still do not have any LFAs in out yard area.
Right or wrong, I believe the eruption has killed them off, and is the reason they haven't come back yet.

Now, we are being inundated with the "crazy ants" throughout our yard.
They don't bite like the LFAs, but are still a great nuance.
I think the absence of LFAs is letting them take over.

We do spread a bit of Amdro pellets around the outside of the house occasionally and it does seem to work.
Do the Crazy Ants feed the same as LFAs: proteins, fats, etc.
Will the Tango bait work on them, or do they need a more directed bait with other ingredients to work well on them?

We have used orange oil in the house to get rid of ants. According to this article, it also can be effectively used in the yard for ant control.

We bought our orange oil in concentrate from Amazon...the link is below.

Crazy ants feed on sweets inc. honeydew from farmed insects, meat, grease, fruit
Sounds kinda like anything they can get!

Thanks Carey,
I might try adding sugar or honey to the Tango bait.
I've noted recently that pineapple fruit will have crazy ants around the bottom of the fruit when picked.
They're undoubtedly after the fruit's sugar.

NOTE:
I'm not sure exactly what type of ants they are.
They're small like LFAs.
We call them crazy ants because LFAs are normally slow moving.
These crazy ants move very rapidly, scurrying around.
They are normally found outdoors, but will move indoors too.

Does this help with a positive ID?

It may take a while to get a positive ID on this one.
I'm going to have to go catch one, kill it, and get enlarged closeup photos to be sure.
Several other things have a higher priority right now, and I'm still recovering from my food poisoning incident, although doing much better.
Must of my wobbliness is gone, although I still tire very easily and need to take naps in the afternoon.

I'm thinking that it is probably a Crazy or Pharaoh.
Around here LFAs are a brownish red color, our crazies are about the same coloring and very close to the same size.
They are invading the yard and setting up many new colonies scattered around.

Tango killed the Electric Ants.... thats what it does... kills them off slowly, makes them so they cant reproduce, and the current pop dies off w/o offspring... takes a few months but its easily the BEST ONE!

for crazy ants, sugar ants, etc..., just use normal cheap ant killers, not very expensive Tango..

they are not unique like the Electric Ants...
the Electric Ant is unique within the entire Animal Kingdom!

this is why there is a queen under every rock, flowerpot, log, etc....
"Reproduction
In Wasmannia auropunctata, queens produce more queens through parthenogenesis. Sterile workers usually are produced from eggs fertilized by males. In some of the eggs fertilized by males, however, the fertilization can cause the female genetic material to be ablated from the zygote. In this way, males pass on only their genes to become fertile male offspring. This is the first recognized example of an animal species where both females and males can reproduce clonally resulting in a complete separation of male and female gene pools.....

These ants get the benefits of both asexual and sexual reproduction - the daughters who can reproduce (the queens) have all of the mother's genes, while the sterile workers whose physical strength and disease resistance are important are produced sexually. ...
