...that tolerates being near the ocean. I’ve tried two already and they both lasted just a couple months.

Yeah, it is a challenge. We finally went to hard-wired but it was a lot of work to run the wires. We have found if we take them down and dust them every 3 months or so it helps to keep them clean and reduces false alarms/ corrosion. We also change the batteries every year.

Smoke detectors were installed in our house when we bought.
They are hard wired with battery back up.
Almost every time lightening struck they were set off.
We got so sick and tired of them ringing and having to shut them down, I turned the breaker off and pulled the batteries.
We've had peace and quiet for a the last 5 years.
We've got 5 of them with 1 up on a cathedral ceiling.
Lately, I've begun to consider replacing or fixing them.
Open to options for dealing with this?

I've had fairly good luck with Kidde brand from Home Depot. I have four of the smoke/CO2 detectors. They're about $45 each. The ones I have take three AA batteries that load from the back. They don't get wired into the house. I think the ones that are hardwired either get fried by lightning or power line anomalies. I have not seen a lot of people with them hooked up long-term, and I HAVE seen a lot disconnected.
They seem to be transitioning to permanent battery detectors that (supposedly) last 10 years. Yeah, I'll believe it when I see it. KEEP YOUR RECEIPT, and return them to HD if they fail. Some will be duds and fail within a month or two. Others will last probably three to five years. I think that's about as good as you're going to get around here. So keep your receipt and hold them to their warranties.

If you don't have and use A/C regularly, buy the cheapest Kidde brand smoke detector you can find. Anything else will be set off by humidity, usually when it peaks between midnight and 3 am. And for all the forgiveness the cheapos provide, they seem to work just as well as expensive units at detecting real smoke or fires. I recently bought a 2 pack on Amazon for under $5.00 for the pair including free shipping. That's generally cheaper than what good 9v batteries cost. Not unexpectedly, batteries not included.

I was told years ago by Kidde that photoelectric are less sensitive to humidity. I’ve installed only that type in houses I’ve built. But they still get triggered. Last night I had one 14’ up the wall going off in extremely humid conditions.
