While the possibility that TMT won't be built here is a horrible loss for science, the local economy, etc, I'm thinking there might yet be a bit of silver lining:

If there is truly no Rule of Law, we can eliminate most County and State functions, and reduce our taxes to almost nothing. What's the point of a Governor or a Mayor or a Police Department if they're just going to stand around and collect a paycheck?

We don't even have to fire them all at once -- once investment dries up, they simply won't have anything to do, and since there's no penalty for not paying taxes (that pesky Rule of Law again) there won't be any money to pay them anyway.

Canary Islands are for the birds.

TMT is the canary in the coal mine. Now that developers have been put on notice that a tiny percentage of the population can destroy any size development regardless of the contributions it will make to current and future generations, they will invest elsewhere.

Superferry: Fool me once, shame on you.
TMT: Fool me twice, shame on me.

Let me close with my biggest concern: we need to keep the fabric of our university from being torn apart.

...and yet that's what seems to be happening.

Superferry had defective permits "expedited" by Lingle; TMT spent 10 years settling their permit issues before attempting to break ground.

Meanwhile, nobody managed to stop HART. People objected to the H-3, too, got it rerouted, and are still calling for its removal. Believed to be the most expensive interstate highway ever built, but a mere $1.3B.

Actually dogs....

I was kidding about canaries, but you’re right ...

“The name Islas Canarias is likely derived from the Latin name Canariae Insulae, meaning "Islands of the Dogs", a name that was applied only to Gran Canaria. According to the historian Pliny the Elder, the Mauretanian king Juba II named the island Canaria because it contained "vast multitudes of dogs of very large size".

Spain has had crippling unemployment for years, of course they welcome a big investment. Maybe that's what Hawaii needs to bring them back to reality.

Hawaii can just raise taxes on their captive audience. What you gonna do, move?

not a hyjac
point of clarity...both Legislative Houses for Hawaii were controlled by democrats...who ultimately control the governor...
