Is Wally’s off Makuu still in business? - EightFingers - 08-06-2019

I’ve called several times and no one answers the phone.

He doesn't have an office clerk to answer the phone. When they're busy...they won't answer. Best to come see him when they open in the morning

As far as I know he is. He takes time off sometimes, and his dad won't answer the phone in that case.

Wally is definitely still in business. He has provided extraordinary professionalism and aloha. A trusted mechanic is a treasure and Wally Tavares is that man. My wife, a petite local girl of Japanese heritage had an interesting experience at a well-known auto business near Malama Market. My wife's dad was a mechanic and she was his tomboy helper. The first estimate she was given was $900. She expressed surprise and questioned the amount. He quickly reduced it to $600. She left. Wally did it quickly, correctly and charged substantially less.

If Wally's is too busy you might want to give Curlee's a try. I've read mixed (though mostly good) things about them but they have always treated us really good. One time I took my elderly junker farm truck to them and since it didn't take long for them to diagnose the problem (bad computer) they spent the remainder of their minimum 1-hour service charge banging out dents etc. One thing I like is that whenever they replace a part they save it and show it to you and explain what was wrong with it. Unfortunately they don't do safety checks. Another time I needed some brake work and not only did it come out $1000 less than that place near Malama, when some bolts were too rusted out to be extracted the Curlee mechanic called me and told me all about the process of extraction and retapping (or whatever he said) and I thought... "OH HERE, IT IS... THIS IS WHERE THEY ARE GOING TO 'GET ME'" and I asked how much it would cost and he hemmed and hawed and came back with "Not sure, maybe $40 or $50?" I don't remember which it was (forty or fifty) but it saved me a fortune and I was impressed he called me and asked if I thought the truck was worth it.

Still not sure if a legal farm truck is worth it. Probably not. Will let you know after the next registration. I'm pretty sure I'm paying like $10/mile just to do infrequent transfer station runs after considering the registration, safety, and insurance fees.
