TMT "concerned" about "inaction" - kalakoa - 08-29-2019

https://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/2019/08/29/hawaii-news/tmt-vice-president-says-project-partners-concerned-over-inaction/

Although the deadline to begin construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope was pushed back until 2021, project authorities believe a decision about the project's future will have to be made soon.

"I don’t know what 'soon' exactly means in this situation, but definitely sooner than two years," said Gordon Squires, TMT’s vice president of external affairs.

Squires said Wednesday that the continued inaction on the project -- which was scheduled to begin construction on Maunakea in July, but has since been impeded by demonstrators blocking the Maunakea Access Road -- may cause some of the project's partners to reconsider their involvement.

Pretty strong language from TMT, there. But it looks like the protestors are "winning", with State and County doing everything they can to help sabotage the project.

continued inaction on the project

The State & County required plenty of action from the TMT, filings, repeated filings, permits, repeated permits, hearings, court cases - - TMT complied with everything asked of them.

Now, what about the authorities that asked the TMT to jump through flaming hoops? Aren't they required to follow through with their end of the bargain? The State and County did say the TMT could build the telescope if everything was resolved in their favor. Otherwise, what was the point, a massive paperwork shuffling project for government workers?

If I was tmt I would pack up and leave the state and county does really want them here. They would never let whats happing on the mountain happen if they did.

a massive paperwork shuffling project for government workers?

One of our biggest local industries, and clearly more important than actually "doing something".

"Should the National Academy of Sciences survey identify TMT as a sufficiently high-priority project in 2020, the project could receive backing from the National Science Foundation."

If that happens...it would be a whole new ballgame. TMT would then be a federally funded project instead of private venture. And I'm sure the feds wouldn't take kindly if their project was being blocked illegally.

TMT should put a stop to this and take their money, jobs and scholarships with them. Why would you continue trying when the minority is the rule?

Spain would appreciate your business. Give the money to the folks that appreciate what you do and continue your studies for the betterment of mankind in peace.

Just stop the madness and move on, it’s not worth the hassle.

If the TMT does decide to move on, Ige and Kim will probably blame them and say they didn't give the gutless politicians enough time. It's called "blaming the victim," and politicians of all stripes do it often.

More worried about precedent, and losing the rule of law.

In case you hadn't noticed, the rule of law in these parts was tenuous, at best, long before the TMT came along. We'll hardly notice that it's gone completely.

Maybe TMT should sue the state? They jumped through every hoop in the court system etc.
