We went to a preview for the 'Imiloa astronomy center today. Even though it is not yet 100% complete it was fantastic. A definite must see.

Great to hear more about Imiloa, Carey. I want to get Gena up there when she's in this summer! I'll be at work then and am looking for evening things we can do...Akebono, Imiloa, etc.

The cafe is also very nice. They serve great tasting breakfast and lunch at reasonable prices. And they will be starting dinner service come Febuary 1. (Chinese Menu). The restaurant has floor to ceiling glass walls for great views of Hilo.

I went a few months ago and I agree it is very impressive. There was so much to see, I think I saw about half and got tired. I loved that everything is in both English and Hawaiian, and they incorporate Hawaiian beliefs into almost everything. Everyone should support this, as it really is a world class museum. The grounds are also nice with lots of native and canoe plants. When I asked about them, the guy in charge of them gave me a personal tour of the grounds.

Wow, I went to my first "tonight's sky" presentation last night & it was incredible. The 3D portion knocked my socks off.

RE: 'Imiloa is wonderful - Carolann R - 01-27-2008

We were there last night too, Erin! We went with Carey & Jim (they took US actually). Wow! It was so cool, I just wanted the 3D to go on for more time...it seemed so short - and then I realized it was 1.5 hours - time flies when you're havin' fun. If you haven't been there GO!!

If you have been putting off going to Imiloa, or just want to see what's new there, they are offering a free admission day to their exhibits SUNDAY NOV. 15, 2009 9am-4pm

The planetarium will be closed all day - there is a conference there - but they will have all of the exhibits open and free to the public.

Of course, next Sat. (Nov 21) will be one of the free evening "Directors Series" talks that they have offered on the 3rd Sat of the month all year in celebration of International Year of Astronomy, with Dr. David James of UH Hilo Telescope
