Anyone else notice the protesters are now building a guava-pole structure and a wooden deck on the Hilo side of Saddle across from the access road intersection now? Glad we are paying all these county and state agencies overtime to enforce the law up there...

My question is this: did the Hawaiians give the same deference to the Marquesans when they were "discovering Hawaii"? Could the Marquesans ignore the "laws of the land"?

I'll be heading to the summit tomorrow (Oct 8th). I've not heard anything about this new structure but will look for it.

It would appear that the original colonizers of Hawaii, the Marquesans, were "relegated to the hills" or "subjugated" by the later arriving Polynesians.
Do the Hawaiians have any stories that include these previous occupants of Hawaii? Did the Marquesans protest changes to their way of life?

I saw the deck, a couple of hundred yards before the intersection driving from Hilo, but wasn't sure if I saw the guava-pole structure. Would it be another couple of hundred yards before the deck? I saw something weird being built there.
It was also interesting to see many camping sites are well away from the encampment including along the Mauna Loa road, almost if they are outcasts, and then there's Mr. Lava Tube - an interesting and innovative choice for his residence.
No problems with access today, but the woman at the protestor's checkpoint wasn't very friendly although coming down, the guy who took over at least acknowledged us and cracked a smile when we said hello.

Yes, I think you saw the same structures. Probably built over endangered species and iwi, crushing sacred rocks and forever polluting the aquifers. Certainly not having passed cultural and environmental reviews and a contested case hearing. Our kapuna are crying, there will be nothing left for our keiki, we will not stand for this violent attack on our aina, the historical trauma will be unbearable, etc etc...
