Looking for a steel gate - geochem - 11-01-2019
I am finally at a point where I can rebuild the home that I lost to arson a couple of years ago - and it's time to invest in a more secure gate before I will feel safe leaving building materials at the site. Can anyone recommend a local source or fabricator for a sturdy gate? (I know a gate won't stop a determined thief - but it may slow them down enough to get a good picture....)
I've heard that White Cap and Del's or Miranda markets gates - does anyone have experience with any of these suppliers?

Someone recently told me Homedepot has a gate for less than half the price of Dels or Mirandas. Not as good but you can zip tie a roll or two of bamboo onto it for an attractive driveway entrance.
Arson? That's terrible, I hope you you had insurance coverage.

I have a gate no one gets through. It is made of 6" dia. steel pipe set in concrete with a concealed lock point.
Expensive but dependable.... it was put in by the sugar company years ago.
Off hand recommendation: Set the gate fat enough back to be able to be completely off the road when you stop to open it. Also make sure it is wide enough and far enough back so a concrete truck or container can make the turn without wiping out your posts.

The driveway gates at Home Depot were a lot cheaper when we looked at them. We have one of their gates (a small one) and it has lasted several years, so they are much better than their fence rolls which are complete crap. They have in the last year or so started selling galvanized T-Posts which originally I steered people against because they were more expensive and of bland Chinese origin but then they dropped the price $3 per 6 foot post (after all the various tariffs, which confuses me) and we've used some of them... so far I have nothing bad to say about them.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations - I'll probably go for the heavier duty gates, given what inadequate security has cost me already, this will be a trivial addition to that. And Punatic007, yes, I did have insurance, which was good, but it amounted to about half the coverage needed to rebuild what was there - and no coverage for the uncountable hours I put in restoring the place after I originally bought it. Lesson learned - if you are going to go to the expense of insuring, then insure for the full replacement cost...
and another lesson learned, calling the police to investigate an arson isn't worth your time or the cost of the call - they have forgotten about the incident by the time they get out of your driveway...

geochem, did the fire dept bring over the K9 arson dog that lives here on the East side? only one in the state as of a couple of years ago.
