Question about mail in HA - KapaFarmer - 11-17-2019

I’m moving to my lot in the acres this January and wondering what everyone does about mail. From what I understand there is a wait for a P.O. Box at most places, what does everyone do in the meantime? And I’m pretty sure I’ve seen a UPS truck in the acres at some point, so does that mean they deliver to some roads?

RE: Question about mail in HA - kalakoa - 11-17-2019

Not all post office have a waitlist.

Not all post offices are "local" for purposes of a "free" PO box.

A "private mailbox service" will often have no waitlist because they're really expensive.

General Delivery is still a thing, but it's not "real" enough for some purposes: credit agencies won't deal with it, but I did get a tax refund check from the IRS that way.

FedEX/UPS are known to deliver into the Acres, but then you'll need a street address; these are available from Planning, with or without a building permit. They will need to know where your driveway is, adjacent addresses are 50'.

Apply for a free box, use general delivery until you get it. UPS and Fedex will also hold general delivery packages for pickup. If you pay for a PO box you can have all three deliver to the PO's street address.

Apply for a free box, use general delivery until you get it.

After 3 years (!) I gave up and found another way.

My understanding that each us post office have boxes for rent while you wait for a free one. If you get on the free list check ever month where your at on the list squeak wheels get greased.

Buy your own CBU for $1675.00 ! Price goes down to $1550.00 if you buy two. Shipping cost is the same for two as it is for one.

Notify HA and the USPS where in the right of way you are installing your boxes. Make it convenient to the USPS and you and your neighbors. ( It has to be on a paved road and out of traffic )

Have the concrete pad installed per USPS instructions. Secure the CBU's with anti-theft nuts from Abany County fasteners.

Sell the individual boxes at a price that will allow you to break even. In our case it was $150.00 each but we got the pad for free using left over concrete from foundations going in. Even at $200.00 it is really cheap because that would be a one time fee.
This fee is less than the annual rent at a mailbox service.

The box would have to remain connected to the TMK of the property. Renters would have to have their property owner apply.

Don't try to tell me it can't be done.I have done it !!

I could be happy picking up my "letters" once a month. My bills are all paid online and with few exceptions all the "letters" are just junk mail. What I really want is packages delivered.

Hopefully you have already gotten your lot address taken care of n the last year:
http://www.punaweb.org/Forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=24545

& you already know how to get "General Delivery" - ie: to ship something general delivery:
JOHN DOE
GENERAL DELIVERY
ANYTOWN NY 12345-9999

From the USPS weblink:
https://www.usps.com/manage/forward-mail.htm
https://faq.usps.com/s/article/What-is-General-Delivery

This system worked fine for us, and we were able to get a Hilo PO Box fairly quickly... and it is fairly convenient to most on the east side, as you are bound to go into Hilo enough times

Here are the local Post Office Addresses:
You can forward mail to general delivery... You do have to pick up general delivery at the window, good way to meet a lot of people, but does take some time....
for the numbers (there are employee numbers, best to check with your local office if you need to call another...):

to get a PO box, you have had to gather some address ID & get it in person at the Post Office of your choice, so stop in & see how much wait-time is involved at the Post Offices of your choice.
OH! & get yourself a Hawaii State ID (if you are not going to get your Hawaii State Drivers License right away) This is really great to have for a number of reasons, including getting things like a PO Box

RE: Question about mail in HA - terracore - 11-17-2019

One can get a PO box without a local ID. I used something from the title company.

RE: Question about mail in HA - Carey - 11-17-2019

I did not state local ID was needed, but you will need SOME reference the ties you to the area (Tax bill, utility bill, something that is an address ID, & a local Hawaii State ID is one of them.
