Big Island Trash - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 12-03-2019 Ryan Finnerty of Hawaii Public Radio posted some photos of the closed Hilo dump, and the one remaining dump on Big Island. Scroll to the last photo for a picture of the hole which will fill with our garbage over the next year: https://twitter.com/rfinnerty1/status/1201707303528828928 RE: Big Island Trash - Carey - 12-03-2019 Public input on waste management plans in Kona & Hilo next week! - Hilo; Aupuni Conference Center, Wed. Also caps for Hi 5 plastic containers, milk jug caps, and such.Much of the plastic containers for hamburger steaks and such will qualify. Remove the paper stick on labels. Looks like they will be collecting once a month from the Shipman fun park (and not Shipman Business Park) in Keaau. Enter the park at the light, follow the road at the park around the field, and look for a trailer to collect the stuff. I went there for the first collection in November. Next one is December 14th, 2:00 to 4:00. They have a Facebook page also. I think they would like if you have the plastics separted by number. Yes, it maybe a drop in the bucket, but it IS a start. They will, or maybe already are, making sellable jtems from the plastics. Here is soething about them on Facebook. https://m.facebook.com/graphsearch/str/puna_precious_plastic/keywords_search?f=Abqp_gnqJ9MZAm9wQrCSg3km19Rr8y69LLfYTu8oZ9hHJ_D4sswljgctB4CHi5GbVP4fhup8AC8XDpf1xoB-4wnjkd2bB-UHO-bSDiEBY7pgi1WYDj3wvSkmkZrQUgRID7EX5I_AgjXjirdrGZg2qLYE&tsid=0.5632964617327785&source=result Jon in Keaau/HPP RE: Big Island Trash - Mangosteen - 12-03-2019 Here's where the recycled plastic ends up. https://www.thestar.com/news/world/2019/11/14/how-the-tofu-is-made-by-incinerating-plastic-shipped-from-the-us.html?fbclid=IwAR3XzU7qI4JkQIKfqbZQRAdgapUQSi0-z5oSRSxDzJiZKwTKkSBrjhuSkd0 RE: Big Island Trash - kalianna - 12-03-2019 Just to be clear, Puna Precious Plastics is not shipping the plastic to China to burn in the making of tofu. And November was actually the second pickup. Tentative plan was to do it 2nd Saturday of every month. RE: Big Island Trash - birdmove - 12-04-2019 I hadn't heard about them before the November pickup. I did mention that they are making, or are going to make sellable items from the plastic. I hope there venture brings them much success and that they grow large enough to process a lot more plastic material. Jon in Keaau/HPP RE: Big Island Trash - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 12-04-2019 Hawaiian celebrity trash talk. Honolulu born Jason Momoa (Aquaman) gives Chris Pratt (Jurassic World, Guardians of the Galaxy, & former Lahaina Bubba Gump’s employee) a Neptunian thrashing for posting an Instagram photo of himself with a disposable plastic water bottle. Pratt’s reply: "Aquaman! You're completely right. Dammit," Pratt responded, explaining that he always carries around a "big gallon size reusable water jug," but that on that day, "If I remember correctly somebody threw that plastic bottle to me in the photo shoot cause I didn't know what to do with my hands!" "My bad," he continued. "I don't want your home of Atlantis covered in plastic. Hear that kids? Reduce. Reuse. Recycle." https://www.nbcnews.com/pop-culture/pop-culture-news/aquaman-calls-out-chris-pratt-posting-photo-holding-plastic-water-n1095346 RE: Big Island Trash - MarkP - 12-04-2019 Interesting. Good point about the power of a celebrity to normalize a practice. Now if Momoa could just stop publicly soiling himself by denouncing the TMT we'd be making progress. |
