Jury Duty - macuu222 - 12-19-2019

I'm just curious to know why I've never been summoned for jury duty in Hilo ....but...... I've been summoned for jury duty in Kona 6 times in the last 30 years (which has always been exempted because of distance). It's not that I really want to be a Hilo juror but just curious how one side of the island always wants me and the other side doesn't.

We've been here about 8 1/2 years now, and I've been notified twice for jury duty in Hilo. Neither time got to jury selection.

I always have been called to Kona - and always exempted due to distance. Typical County stupidity.

I've been called a few times in 40 yrs and you call a special phone number the night before to make sure the trial is still set to go and each time it's cancelled.

My girlfriend was summoned for a case in Hilo recently and lives in Kona. I sent an e-mail to the state judiciary complaining about this wasteful practice of summoning people living 70 miles from the east and west Hawaii courthouses. This was the response I received.

"Aloha Mr. Stene,

Thank you for contacting us about this.

The question of separating out potential jurors who live 70 miles from the courthouse they are summoned to is one we hear from time to time. At the time the qualification questionaries are sent out, we include the statutory language of disqualifications, exemptions and excuses. Some of the exemptions can be claimed such as age and would be immediately taken out of the certified jury lists. The 70 miles exemption, however, can only be considered when one is actually summoned to a specific court for a specific case. We do not separate the jurors based on the 70 mile exemption at the outset because all the jurors by statute are part of one judicial circuit which is the island of Hawaii. There is no jury pool for West Hawaii nor a jury pool for East Hawaii. This 70 miles exemption is not automatic and is not a disqualification for jury service. The 70 mile exemption exists for those who want to claim it, but oftentimes jurors don't mind travel and reimbursement for mileage along with their jury fee.

As your girlfriend has now been summoned, there are instructions on the summons she can complete to claim any pertinent exemption now, including the 70-mile exemption."

some of that statement from the court is not true. my husband has an auto exemption and still gets summons every year. one year he had changed his po box, did not get the summons, they sent a cop out to his place of employment and he had to take off work to go to court and pay a big fine for not responding to his automatic exemption. i get one every single year, even the year after i served on the jury.. another better system needs to be in place.
