5-0 on Mauna Kea? - Old Croc - 01-12-2020 So my understanding is that five valuable telescopes will be removed in exchange for construction of the TMT, but since it probably won't be built in Hawaii, it's a win-win situation for the anarchists? RE: 5-0 on Mauna Kea? - kalakoa - 01-12-2020 Correct -- but as this "bargain" was not approved by the "protectors", it's quite irrelevant. RE: 5-0 on Mauna Kea? - TomK - 01-12-2020 Old Croc - it's partly correct. Currently, if the TMT is built, five observatories will be decommissioned by 2033. However, if the TMT is not built, there is no such deal. RE: 5-0 on Mauna Kea? - kalakoa - 01-12-2020 Confused: the "protectors" have made it clear they will not "allow" TMT to be built under any circumstances, which means there's no point in decommissioning anything (?) RE: 5-0 on Mauna Kea? - TomK - 01-12-2020 The lease for the area in which the observatories operate ends in 2033, so unless that is renewed, all the observatories have to be decommissioned by then. In the meantime, funding and technical issues mean the CSO and Hoku Kea are currently going through the decommissioning process - nothing to do with the TMT. You also need to remember this decommissioning nonsense has come from the state, not from the MK observatories, so it's purely political. The reason UKIRT was named as the third observatory to be decommissioned (which is no longer the case) was due to due a completely illogical and unscientific decision made by politicians and the UH Board of Regents. RE: 5-0 on Mauna Kea? - kalakoa - 01-12-2020 nothing to do with the TMT Other than being presented as a "deal", some kind of "trade". I think it's called the "shaped like, or in the same room as" principle. RE: 5-0 on Mauna Kea? - TomK - 01-12-2020 I think it's much more like politicians involving themselves in things they know nothing about and screwing everything up. RE: 5-0 on Mauna Kea? - Aaron S - 01-13-2020 https://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/2020/01/12/hawaii-news/removal-of-observatory-on-schedule/ The United Kingdom Infrared Telescope is scheduled to be decommissioned by the end of 2024, while the fourth telescope, the Very Long Baseline Array, will be removed by the end of 2033. RE: 5-0 on Mauna Kea? - Guest - 01-13-2020 Old Croc- Who are these "Anarchists" that would recieve this Win-Win scenario of yours? TomK- A bit Confused by these so-called deals you write about. Why would these 5 observatories NOT be decommissioned by 2033 if the TMT is NOT built? Would'nt all the observatories including the TMT "IF" built be decommissioned when the land lease expires in 2033? Also, "Who" really gets to decide the fate and future of Mauna Kea in 13 years, 2033? So many differant groups or Mr HKim's that have Ideas, Opinions, deals, Voices and or the Right amount of $$$$. Astronomers, University, "politicians screwing everything up", Governments, Militaries, Old Croc's "Anarchists", Hawaiians, OHA, residents of Big island or state of Hawaii, ect....? After listening to president Trump's continued threats of other countries cultural sites this past week. If built, The TMT's "EYE" in the Northern hemisphere and Mauna Kea's significance to some may bring future attention like targets or threats from country leaders like Iran or N Korea. RE: 5-0 on Mauna Kea? - PaulW - 01-13-2020 You think Iran wants to destroy/stop a telescope? Even they are way too advanced to think like that. |
