Not Puna-related, but this pair of movies was just recently released on DVD and they are truly excellent -- I saw them when they came out 20 years ago and have been waiting for them on DVD.
Jean des Florette and Manon des Source (Manon of the Spring)
Yes, they are in French with subtitles but are honestly two of the best movies I have EVER seen.

Yep, They are good. I have them on my shelf here. Gerrard Depardieu is an excellent actor and the stories are well told.

Thank you, John.There is a wonderful world of French movies and music "to die for", not completely discovered .Sadly because of some political games.
Gérard Depardieu is an amazing actor.There is something about him that makes women fall in love with him.A smile which lightens his face? The aura of romance?
If you like a great comedy,check old movies with Louis de Funès.It was a long time ago,but the folks were coming out the movie theaters with a sore muscles-couldn't laugh anymore!

There are tons of great movies from other countries and non-Hollywood American productions that are way more entertaining than the typical Hollywood fare. These non-H-wood films are usually more character-driven and built around a good story. Too many American productions go with special effects, loud Surround-Sound audio, and CGI instead of a good story and acting because the former seems to be less risky and may return more at the box office.
A few favorites:
Derzu Uzala - at Russian production, dir. by Akira Kurosawa
Sugar Cane Alley - about cane workers at an African plantation
Gaijin - about Japanese and other immigrant cane workers in Brazil, unfortunately not available except at retrospective screenings
El Espinazo del Diablo (Devil's Backbone) - a Spanish movie set just after the Spanish Civil War, dir. by Guillermo del Toro - okay, this one has special effects
Spirit of the Beehive (El Espiritu de la Colmena) - another post Spanish Civil War setting
Cold Fever - an Icelandic/Japanese production
As for American films, I like all Jim Jarmusch and John Sayles' films, American directors who shun the typical Hollywood production values. The Cohen brothers' movies are good, too (they are becoming more main-stream; likewise with Spike Lee). "The Big Lebowski" is an all-time fave. During the winter holiday season, we like watching "The Ref" and "A Nightmare Before Christmas".

"Cinema Paradiso" is a wonderful movie and comes in a shorter version (the theatrical release) and a longer directors cut. Both are great. ( I own both) but the longer one is more satisfying because it gives more background as to the protagonist's motivation. Story is a return to the hometown of a famous movie maker and reealing why he loves movies. a wonderful film.
Another great movie is the French film "Les Choristes". story is a musician teaches at a boys (reform) school and changes their lives through music. If you can get to the end of this without crying you have no heart. Number one in France at the box office for 2004.

StillHope, my most favorite Gerard D. movie is "Camille Claudel" (1988). It's about Auguste Rodin and his affair with Sculptor Camille Claudel (Isabelle Adjani). I swear it's more passionate and depressing and beautiful than most I can think of...and Isabelle Adjani is stunningly pretty. Do you know it??

OK,This thread made me think of another wonderful film that came out several years ago that I encourage all to see. It's called "Women on the verge of a nervous breakdown". It's a Spanish language film, but really great and funny.
