If you think that we have too much e-waste then perhaps its time everyone call their state senators to support this bill. This bill not only will protect your right to repair your own stuff but will make it easier for someone who can repair to get necessary documentation and replacement parts for all the electronic gadgetry we own.
The electronic industry is obviously opposed to this bill because they would rather charge you outrageous fees to their network of repair people or sell you a new one. They use fear tactics as though somehow replacing the battery in your cellphone is more dangerous than someone replacing the brakes in their car. or that for some explicable reason by doing such repair work you will reverse engineer the software that runs on it. It ludicrous.

"Requires original equipment manufacturers of digital electronic devices to make diagnostic and repair information available to device owners and independent repair providers."

Pretty sure that would violate their right to their proprietary tech !

Nice distraction. Could we have some useful legislation instead?

Laws aren't enforced here, so what's the point?

On the mainland there is a fight about being able to repair farm tractors. The big company’s have proprietary software so you can’t fix them yourself. Think someone here tried to cut and paste that bill but missed the point

Youtube is a great help sometimes.I found a way to replace the rear brakes on a 2016 Mazda CX-5 without having to take it to a dealer.

It has electric parking brakes and the dealers computer is needed to get the caliper pistons to retract. You have to get the computers in the car in to service mode.

There is a way to do it with a sequence of button pushing in the car.

Thanks youtube !

I was using cheaper non Epson ink for my printer. After I did a firmware update, the printer no longer recognizes the ink cartridge. Google told me this update was just for this purpose, to make the printer unable to use anything but Epson ink. Now I have to buy their twice as expensive ink and the ones I already bought are useless. I was buying nothing but Epson printers but this will be the last one.

Such a scummy practice. Can you "update" to an older firmware?

Right - can't you just downgrade to a previous firmware version?

You could do that with the older Epson printers but the ability to do so has been eliminated with the newer ones. I read they could be sued for this practice.
