Why does incompetence happen here so much? - TomK - 02-21-2020 "Personal health information of nearly 2,900 Queen’s patients sent to wrong email address" https://www.staradvertiser.com/2020/02/21/hawaii-news/personal-health-information-of-nearly-2900-queens-patients-sent-to-wrong-email-address/ "The email sent to the wrong address by an employee included an attachment with information on 2,852 patients who had been seen since June 1, 2019, according to a news release from Queens. Information included the patient name, account number, health plan ID, admission date, discharge date and “limited information related to the patients’ care.” Diagnoses were included for 300 individuals. The error was discovered the day after the email was sent, but efforts to contact the individual and recall the message have not succeeded, according to Queens." What will be the next example of complete incompetence by the state or counties? It's hard to keep up with it. RE: Why does incompetence happen here so much? - Punatic007 - 02-22-2020 At one time, a few decades ago, the BI recorded the highest domestic murder, abuse, child abuse and more of any county in the USA. Then a government funded group of sociologists from the mainland did a study and deemed the BI "a culture on the decline". Who thought it would ever devolve into blocking the road to the observatories? The best thing that ever happened to this island. Much of our population are descendants of uneducated, uncultured migrant workers, those who came to the most remote island chain in the world with minimal intellectual stimulus, no schools or culture. An ethical culture with a functioning moral compass simply did not evolve. RE: Why does incompetence happen here so much? - kalakoa - 02-22-2020 Unions and the "old boy network" mean there are no repercussions. Alternately, I favor the "captive audience theory" -- no competition. What are you going to do, drive to the next County where they might have better policies? patient name, account number, health plan ID, admission date, discharge date All of which are PII under HIPAA, if there were really "rules and laws (for everyone)". RE: Why does incompetence happen here so much? - Guest - 02-22-2020 quote:What do you suggest would be better? RE: Why does incompetence happen here so much? - geochem - 02-22-2020 We all know the answer to the title of this thread: incompetence is tolerated when you have an entrenched political power structure. The only rule is don't embarrass (or worse yet, try to overturn) the politically powerful. Has been this way for decades - anyone recall the name Nelson Doi? He was a former Lt. Gov under Ariyoshi - had the poor taste not to wait his turn and ran against Ariyoshi for his final term in office. Doi was popular, but lost the election. Completely disappeared from the scene - next I heard of him in the media, he was a Judge... in Guam. The only reason the idiot responsible for the missile alert got fired was because he embarrassed the Governor... If you want something different, elect someone different... RE: Why does incompetence happen here so much? - EightFingers - 02-22-2020 The answer is the talent pool is very small. Puna: Our roosters crow first RE: Why does incompetence happen here so much? - sistersue - 02-22-2020 Most of the time living in Puna feels like we're living in the Twilight Zone. RE: Why does incompetence happen here so much? - kalakoa - 02-22-2020 the talent pool is very small The pool of "right people" is very small. RE: Why does incompetence happen here so much? - TomK - 02-22-2020 Thanks, for your thoughts, everyone, despite how depressing they are. Sh*t happens, but it seems to happen here so often without repercussions which is so disenchanting. RE: Why does incompetence happen here so much? - KeaauRich - 02-23-2020 quote: The pool is small because the county offers relatively high salaries for low skill job worker. But for jobs that require higher levels of expertise, the County doesn't offer salaries high enough to attract skilled workers from the mainland or keep locally trained workers from leaving for greener pastures across the ocean. On the rare occasions when skilled workers do come here and try to get employment, they face huge obstacles when trying to get hired unless they know/are related to "the right people." And if they do get hired, they soon become frustrated by the lackadaisical work ethic and inefficiencies/incompetence that are the standard of our government. I remember the confirmation hearing for our current County IT Director - who wasn't questioned about her network administration or programming expertise (she doesn't have any). Instead our Council representatives lauded her hobby of skydiving. But as long as the electorate puts up with it -- and apparently the electorate's tolerance for incompetence is exceedingly high -- that's as good as we'll get. |
