Nightly fireworks/guns driving my dogs nuts - randomq - 03-21-2020

Does anyone else hear these pops every night? Sounds like fireworks or distant shotguns. Driving my poor dogs nuts...

Yes, I am in central HPP, and it has never really stopped for more than a day or two since November! Even if you report a specific location, the cops say they have to observe the act of setting them off to do anything. We use tranquilizers for the 4th of July and New Years, but you can't keep the poor critters on them all the time.

My poor old dogs, one of which has severe fireworks panic attacks, have, believe it or not, become a little less upset than they have in the past. Nowadays, if the idiot behind my lot does fireworks, which he often does, the dogs endure it for about 5 or 6 explosions. If it's more than that the older dog becomes frantic, and I have to go out and bring him into the house. On New Year's Eve and 4th of July I have to bring them both in and drug them because they suffer too much if I don't.

Why are they shooting them this time of year?

"Why are they shooting them this time of year?"

Because they're idiots. I thought for a moment that maybe they think the bangs will keep the virus away, but then remembered that they really never stopped after New Years.

I agree with Chuckster - they're idiots who like to bother the neighbors and show off that they can get away with it. They are too stupid, or don't care, that it tortures the animals much more than the adults Sad

You live in a place where you know this happens (including thunder). Train the animal to not be afraid to begin with. I have always trained my hunting dogs and even succeeded with most cats over the years.

leilanidude, I have tried, usually playing with them when there is thunder. Any suggestions on how to train them?

We trained our dog by having her perform tasks (sit, shake, stay, lay down, etc) while there was thunder and giving her treats for completing the tasks.

It worked until one day we were outside and the coco palm next to me was hit by lightning. Knocked the wits out of me. Ever since then the dog loses her mind when there is thunder. When there is a storm she hides in the bathtub. Thinking back how being close to the lightning strike affected me and I was wearing boots etc and she was in direct contact with the ground I can understand her PTSD. As a human I was able to rationalize what occurred but the dog has no idea that being in the house will protect her from it happening again.

Legislation outlawing fireworks would be wonderful.
