YB loses at least 9 shipping containers - terracore - 06-22-2020
HILO, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - The U.S. Coast Guard is warning boaters of a potential hazard after multiple shipping containers were found floating in waters off Hilo on Monday morning.
Officials said a fisherman reported seeing the containers about 3 miles east of Pepeekeo Point.
The Coast Guard said Young Brothers lost them overboard somehow.
A viewer told Hawaii News Now that her husband was fishing and counted nine shipping containers in the waters.
It’s not clear what products were in the containers.
There are no reports of any missing people in the water.

UPDATE: Received confirmation that approximately 12 containers have fallen off the Young Brothers shipping barge just north of Hilo early this morning.
This barge sailed on Saturday from Honolulu and was scheduled to arrive in Hilo on Monday morning. As everyone is aware, YB asked the PUC for relief to reduce shipping service to Hawaiʻi Island and other neighbor islands by reducing delivery to Hilo to just once a week.
It is clear by the photos that this barge is overloaded and should not have been loaded 5 high on the entire barge rather than normal operations which is 5 high on the straight away.
With the legislature re-convening today I intend to discuss this with my colleagues and Senator Lorraine R Inouye who is the Chair of the Transportation committee to find out exactly what happened both from the PUC and Young Brothers. We also need to know immediately what items are in those containers and if their are any hazardous materials that are in them.
BL: We need TWO barge deliveries a week to Hilo.

Shouldn't YB be out there trying to pick up the containers out of the water or at least drag them to shore? If someone goes out and gets the container, is that ocean salvage?

How long would a container float? They're pretty airtight aren't they?

They have air vents and the wood floors aren't waterproof. Also they are easily punctured or torn during events like being rolled over while cascading off a barge.

I think I may possibly have items on that barge from Amazon due now, septic microbes, a taco tray and a rubber chicken! I’m most upset about the rubber chicken, I guess I should have ordered a rubber duck instead.
We have Black Jersey Giant chicks arriving tomorrow from a hatchery so the rubber chicken was going to keep them company. Luckily the chicks are flying and not on that barge too because Black Chickens Matter.
