Rust and fridges - frossie - 05-19-2008 We've been thinking of buying a new refrigerator (mostly to get rid of the current energy hog). I really dislike the stainless steel look and prefer white appliances but it is true that the current fridge door is covered in rust. Is it inevitable that white refrigerator doors will rust in Hawaii or is it just older models? Does anybody there have a white fridge that has not rusted? RE: Rust and fridges - Tolleys - 05-19-2008 Frossie, I like your question. We will be buying a frig soon for new construction we too are wondering which rusts less??
Our thinking is that all will rust, but it will be less noticable on the black... Susan RE: Rust and fridges - leilaniguy - 05-19-2008 Carwax will keep the rust off if you are diligent, rewaxing every few months. I'm not diligent, so I just keep a can of Krylon handy. RE: Rust and fridges - oink - 05-19-2008 If it's actually stainless steel, that would be the best option. If it's just a chrome or nickle plating giving a stainless look, it will eventually rust. Stainless can rust but not near as much and some steel wool will bring it back. Silicone spray or a wax will help preserve it. Pua`a S. FL Big Islander to be. RE: Rust and fridges - Kelena - 05-19-2008 What kind of silicone spray? RE: Rust and fridges - oink - 05-19-2008 The kind in the can. I don't know brands. The only one that comes to mind is Amway WonderMist, if you know a dealer. Just be careful about overspray onto the floor. You can really bust your ass that way. Pua`a S. FL Big Islander to be. RE: Rust and fridges - gtill - 05-19-2008 Plus with the silicone, if you get it on any painted surface paint won't stick to it ! Krylon in applance white is the answer! RE: Rust and fridges - Kelena - 05-19-2008 And so does it make the stainless steel surface slippery and, uh, unpleasant? Or does it, you know, kinda dry, you know and form a slick barrier on the surface? RE: Rust and fridges - oink - 05-19-2008 It dries but remains kind of slick (but a dry slick) until it wears off. It does serve as a lubricant. It's a good rust inhibitor for guns and reels etc. or any metal surface prone to corrosion. It can make some materials, such as leather or canvas, water resistant. For rust prevention, it provides a barrier that doesn't feel oily when dry but will reduce friction, so you don't want it on a floor. I really mean that. You won't be able to see it but it will be slicker than owl sh*t. I don't usually spray directly on the metal but on a clean rag and then wipe it on. Different brands may use different carriers and that may be an issue on some finishes. Experiment when trying on a new surface. Pua`a S. FL Big Islander to be. RE: Rust and fridges - Greg - 05-19-2008 I have a rust colored refrigerator; no problems. |
