I believe so as long as they meet NSF national certification requirements, which most commercially (retail) available are.

Probably due to lack of demand, and the fact that you have to install a septic tank anyway.

You may be correct as to lack of demand, but I was under the impression that Composting Toilets were an approved alternative to Septic systems for human waste.  There is of course the issue with gray water , and the proper disposal of the same (from sinks, showers etc.) requires some form of system to treat the effluent from such.  Nevertheless, many of the sustainable living ilk seems to talk a lot about composting systems.  I am just surprised that no one knows of any distributors on the island.  Most talk on FB pages, etc., describe available systems and talk of shipping from the mainland.   I saw a post of how one person installed a NSF approved system that produces Bio -methane (?) gas that is captured and used in heating (food, water) effectively here on the the island.

Think the main reason for not having a septic is money. Why would you buy an expensive gizmo toilet when pooping in the woods is free

Ultimate off grid may carry. My last visit several months ago I believe they had something like that: jason.ultimateoffgrid@gmail.com

Permitting isn't based on "your current use", it must account for all possible future use of the property. Someone might put meat scraps down the drain, now you need a septic tank for your graywater.

If the State were serious about alternatives, they would type-approve a few different composting toilets so as to streamline the permitting process.

It is my understanding that the State has approved Composting Toilets that are NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) certified.
