Artificial Surfing Reef - LeeE - 05-22-2008

Any interest out there or discussion of creating an artificial surfing reef here?

The existing spots here can have their day from time to time, but the area sure could use a couple of quality surf spots, imho.

Aloha,
Lee

Touchy subject....

I bite... I don't think we need to mess with Mother Earth to create are own personal places to play.

I understand the need to submerse some stuff... however it is confusing to me why we would intentionally damage the ocean floors for personal enjoyment.

maybe if we had better surfing spots our youth would have more positive things to keep them busy.

Actually it doesn’t damage the oceans floor. It promotes the growth of corals and provides sanctuary’s for many of the oceans wildlife. New life to old areas by adding structure to where there isn’t any. Florida has had an artificial reef program for years and very sucsessful. Besides the promotion of wildlife it promotes recreational diving and surf areas. It seems that you have an opinion on every post on this forum. I scuba dive on this side of island once a month with our club and can testify to the deterioration of the coral reef and fish. (www.divehilo.com)
Maybe before you state your position you might want to get wet over here and experience what we have seen. It might make your rebuttals a bit more tangible.

According to Ocean Conservancy Organization:

Artificial reefs can cause damage to natural habitats during their construction and can displace naturally occurring species and habitats. They also tend to concentrate fish unnaturally, making them more vulnerable to overfishing. In some cases, they introduce toxins and other pollutants into the ocean.

And I've been getting wet over here on/off since 1976 [Wink]

Damon,
Your problem is you read way too much and evidently you believe everything you read. I’m giving you hands on testimony from what I have seen over 10 years in south Florida. The artificial reef program works. I could send you 50 links that say the opposite of your articles but it’s not telling you what’s happening here. How many dives have you made in the last 12 months here in HILO?
Moreover, your posts are getting old- all you do is cut and paste others options and facts. “This guy says this and that guy says that”. You need to take a break from the quotes and experience some of topics you discuss first hand.

I know some will hate to hear it, but on this, there is a very slim to none chance, just based on the upfront EIS work that would be involved in a coastal project; and the cash outlay for a land based wave pool is probably not in the cards here, right now. I used a smallish (less than million gallon) wave pool in the midwest for years, great fun, but with the population base & spending priorities, the millions it would take probably make this just pie in the sky stuff.....

But don't they just submerge huge things and let the reef grow on it? How much could that be?

I've always liked the idea of creating a surf spot. I think a great place to try it would be in Kalapana at the ocean across from Uncle Roberts/Vernas. The near shore bottom was covered with lava, eliminating any sea life there. The new shore is baren because it's so young.

Imagine this; Carve out a protected shallow bay in the lava for keiki swimming, crush the rock as it's excavated and deposit it off shore creating a point. Design it to maximise east trade wind waves and summer south swells.

This wouldn't be without controversy, but doesn't involve radiation, introduced insects, GMO or other controversial technologies.

It would be an economic stimulis to the area, and take pressure off Po'oiki Bay.

FYI -

Hawaii already has Artificial Reefs and is continuing to study them and possibly implement more
