Hawaiian Electric Smart Meters - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 12-19-2020

I don't usually read the newsletter that comes with my electric bill, but this month's caught my eye.  Hawaiian Electric will begin installing more smart meters in 2021.  According to the company. the new meters will:

* Show your household energy use through an online portal
* Provide faster notice of power outages to the company
* Future implementation of "dynamic pricing" or time of use rates.  (run your dryer at 3 AM, save $)

I'm not sure how I feel about dynamic pricing as this kind of thing usually benefits the biller more than than payer, but we shall see.  If it encourages greater use of solar power and results in smaller fossil fuel backup systems I suppose it could be of benefit in the long run.  If you believe this upgrade is more like dynamic spying rather then dynamic pricing, HELCO will allow you to opt out.

RE: Hawaiian Electric Smart Meters - terracore - 12-19-2020

Our house already has a "smart meter" and we don't have any of those features. I know it doesn't notify them when our power goes out.

Which "Hawaiian Electric" will be installing smart meters "where"? Did they ask the unions for permission to lay people off as their jobs are automated out of existence?

HELCO installed a smart meter here in HPP a couple of months ago so meter readers wouldn't have to run the dog gauntlets any more. They didn't say anything about any apps though. I did ask about job loss and our meter reader told us it didn't appear that anyone would lose their jobs because of it. Yet.

We got one a few years ago when the meter reader thought Siegfried the Chunkhund was too intimidating to come in the yard to read the old one. We were told about the potential features, but like terracore, haven't experienced any of them. Oddly, our power bill seemed to be consistently lower afterward, but that could be from any number of other factors.

Mine too (I also had a smart meter installed a year or so ago).

but that could be from any number of other factors.

Same for me.  I let slide though and gave HELCO the benefit of the doubt, as I have enough other bills to investigate that don’t fall in my favor.
