Restoration of the road was due to start 10/21. Now FEMA is requiring an Environmental Impact Statement. New start date is mid-2022. I guess they're concerned that we don't hurt the lava in the process of restoring the road that was covered by lava.

If the county had not delayed so long - it probably would not have been needed. They did not need it for the other road repairs.

It is a result of realigning the road to avoid the protected mango trees. A couple of property owners are allowing the road to be built on their land. Uncle Kimo may have been buried there.

How about this deal.
They're doing an environmental assessment of properties that are buried under 85 ft of lava ! (At least in my case.)
"The County of Hawai‘i’s Disaster Recovery Division will host a public informational meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21 online via Zoom regarding an Environmental Assessment (EA) that is being conducted for the Voluntary Housing Buyout Program (VHBP).
The EA will assess any potential impacts of the VHBP to natural habitats, protected species, and cultural and historical resources. The review is required since the VHBP will be spending Federal funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery program."

considering how bad the economy overall is these days, I’m surprised they are getting money at all.
I fall asleep at night swimming in Ahalanui (long gone, never forgotten).
