Is it finances or......? - chrislo09 - 06-04-2008

Why do you live in Puna? Is it just because it's just about the cheapest place to live in Hawaii? Or what? I was thinking about buying a rental property there, but I have problems with the rain (why I live in Waikoloa). So what other reasons do you have???

Chris

I live here... because my ohana has lived here long before documented history.

On the haole side... Gramps set up one of the first hospitals on the island.

I came here for the university - I am staying because I REALLY like it (Puna has some really great areas and attractions plus the closeness to all of the cultural venues, and oppurtunities of Hilo.

I do like the east side weather.... infact, I expected more wetness, but find it much better than 'April Showers' ie. dreary days of spring, that we had in the midwest... but then, most ANY weather here is better than much of the midwest weather - why midwesterners relish the few 'perfect' days they are tossed...

I have done field research all around the island, although where we live is not the most perfect area on island, or on earth, sure beats some other areas on island & most other areas on earth.

The cost of housing was not the deciding factor when we chose this house, or the community, or the district....(there are land values in Puna that are on par with land values in Waikaloa & other parts of Kona...)

We have friends that moved from Waikaloa to the rainy Hamakua coast because they no longer wanted to live with the wind, the dryness, the wild fires & smoke, the road congestion & traffic, the near constant haze & VOG (this was before the present levels).... I gotta admit, I kinda do not understand the attraction of Waikaloa

That is one of the true beauties of this island, there is enough diversity for a diversity of opinions on where is the best place to live... so if you want to invest in housing in Puna for rentals, that is your choice.

We picked upper Puna for the rain forest, the rural culture, the land availability, the lack of humidity. Don't let anyone fool you. When it is wet, it is WET but there are plenty of not-wet days that are heavenly.

Just another day in P A R A D I S E !!

Pam,
I can understand the lack of humidity where you are. When I visited you last October, there wasn't any room for humidity among the raindrops.

I live here "because" of the rain. I like the rain....it keeps everything green and growing. Also the fresh air (at least where I live) it's the freshest on the planet. Kona side gets all the vog. I wouldn't live on the Kona side even if I wasn't a millionaire.

When you are researching Hawaii property from afar, Puna pops up over and over again on the list as among the least expensive land in Hawaii. From the frequent mention and pictures of lavascapes, you can see why. So, yes, that is the attraction for many, but if others are like me, they come to investigate the lower priced property and then fall in love with the place.

I focused hard on Kauai, and did a lot of searching there. Made an offer on a condo in Princeville, got a counter-offer, realized that what I really wanted was a house and did not accept the counter-offer. I flew from Kauai where I was staying in Princeville (friend's condo) to Puna. I felt like I had been plunged into another, equally sensuous world. The volcano scared the bejesus out of me, but it was the frogs that really gave me pause. But I loved the offbeat, independent vibe of the place and its end-of-the-world feel. Puna has a character --and characters, someday to include me (and temporarily to include me very soon!)-- that you simply will not find elsewhere.

I chose not to go on the West side because of the Vog, although I love visiting. Other places I really like are Hawi (which is now a haven from the Vog!), and Waimea. Waimea is awesome because it straddles both sides of the island, is warm during the day, but cool and refreshing at night, and has great yuppie amenities, all within striking distance of fantastic beaches and snorkeling.

Although many come to Puna because it is less expensive, they often find themselves seduced by the place on its own terms: The Goddess vamps, she lifts her eyes and arms to the skies, the black sand is hot beneath her, and so she lifts her feet up and down, alternating, and undulating. A sudden squall comes off the ocean, and she is wet and glistening, naked before you. You feel a little quake. Steam rises from the land and there is fire.

Try that in Kona.

My two favorite places on this island for 60% of the year is Puako and Kapoho. Puako is unaffordable now for most of the population. Glad I got to live there when it was economical.

The other 40% (June July Aug Sept & part of Oct) I loved living on the wet side of Waimea, Honomu, and Hawaiian Acres. Again I lived in Waimea when it was affordable.
