Catastrophic rain event Sunday AM 12/5 to Monday - Kiana - 12-05-2021

I don't think I've ever read the words "catastrophic" in a local weather alert. Here's the Hawaii County Alerts and Notification from 4 pm today, Saturday, 12/4 in case you haven't seen it:

The National Weather Service has issued the following update and weather statement;

A Flood Watch, for the State and Island of Hawaii remains in effect through Tuesday.  The National Weather Service is forecasting a Catastrophic rain event beginning with Hawaii Island on Sunday morning.  Rain events of this size can affect areas that do not usually flood.

Due to the Flood Watch, conditions are favorable for flash flooding and the following are issued:

All Residents in flood prone areas are asked to remain alert for flooding conditions and to take this time to prepare and address any flooding concerns.

Sandbags will be delivered for active flooding contact Civil Defense at 935-0031.

Prepare for sudden road closures due to flooding, landslides and debris on roadways.

Remember, if lightning threatens your area, the safest place to be is indoors.

Do not cross fast flowing water in your vehicle or on foot, turn around don’t drown.

In addition the following conditions continue:

A High Wind Warning and Blizzard Warning for the Summits of Hawaii Island and a Wind Advisory for the rest of Hawaii Island through Monday.

Due to the Wind Advisory the following are issued:

Secure outdoor items.

Prepare for utility outages.

Be aware for debris on roadways and road closures without notice.

Limit travel to necessary needs.

High Surf has been upgraded to Warning Levels through Monday for the coastal areas of North Kona, North and South Kohala, Hamakua and Hilo.  Expect strong breaking waves, shorebreak, and strong currents making swimming difficult and dangerous.

Due to the High Surf Warning the following are issued:

Secure all property and vessels prior to the arrival of large surf.
Follow the direction of Ocean Safety Officials.

I noticed that wording also. It will be hard to beat Hurricane Lane and although that caused a lot of damage to some areas, I would hardly call it catastrophic. Maybe Magno just learned about adjectives. :-)

It's a watch warning. Seen this same warning many times.

So far not so bad. I know, it's early. An animated video posted elsewhere seemed to show most of the heavy rain streaming north off to our east. Hope so.

I've been charging my batteries off of the grid just in case.

Getting a little gusty up here in HA, but only on and off...

ETA: Yeah, I too am preemptively charging up, in case it gets worse tonight and I don't feel like going out in the rain.

Yeah it seemed to be more of a wind event than a catastrophic rain event....so far.   Trees and branches down everywhere.  Looking at the radar map, maybe the bulk of the wetness hit somewhere other than Puna for once.

It's forecasted to park and dump rain until Tuesday.
