Solar Flare Armageddon - randomq - 12-16-2021

Lots of news lately about the increasing possibility of massive solar flares ala a "Carrington Event" destroying our electrical and communication infrastructure. The solar telescope on Maui is supposed to give us several hours of notice to make preparations for such an event, but do you think we're ready?

- Would HELCO actually do anything meaningful with the warning, like disconnect lines or harden infrastructure?

- Would the massive damage affect our island supply chain? Shipping/port operations? Electricity to the county water system? Refrigeration at grocery stores?

- What are your personal plans in such an event? Turn off all the breakers basically? Stockpile bulk potable water?

I suppose thats as good of reason as any for a banking reset, either that or hackers will steal the money.

They sell whole house surge suppressors that are supposed to protect items within the house. but the things in the house wont run if the power lines are melted. The power grid is woefully unprepared for such events, either EMP or Carrington. Maybe even worse considering how everything is done in Hawaii.

Remember Iselle wrecking the power grid? imagine what would happen if the power company is unable to have the ability to source replacement parts.
Perishable food would spoil, gas wont pump, everything would shut down. Weeks would turn into years before power was restored if ever. Luckily in Hawaii freezing to death is not a huge problem.

Im not sure even people on solar would be immune to the effects. Society is fragile and nobody knows how to live like it was 1880 anymore. There are only a couple of preps that you could have, a storage of food and an operational farm as well as a means to protect your food supply from neighbors/anyone who wants to take it away from you. There would be no continuity in government, nobody is going to come help. your on your own. Perhaps you could right now get to know the neighbors and have some sort of support group where you can rely on each other. But if things get really bad that might fall apart.
Its something to think about anyway. How well do you get along with everyone in your neighborhood? Which ones will be the troublemakers? Which ones would you have to worry about coming into your house at 3am and stealing what you have left? Which ones could you rely on watching out for you?

What will it do to my solar power system?

If it rains, most people in Puna will have water in above ground catchment tanks.
Sweet potatoes and New Zealand spinach grow with little effort and barely look like food.  Lots of other edible leafy greens on trees and shrubs too.

At least I don't have to bother with vaccination anymore.

don't have to bother with vaccination

Also:
Even if the government emergency air lifts food to the island for our hungry starving masses, should the state or feds put any restrictions whatsoever on how much each person is allotted, which deprives them of their freedom to take as much food as they want they’ll protest and show their displeasure by refusing any because they would rather starve to death than be under the jackboot thuggery of Ige, so we won’t have to worry about them coming to our homes and stealing our food any more.  With fewer survivors each person will also get their share increased from the total delivery.  It’s a twofer.

Assuming the event isn't nuclear EMP level and most of my devices survive, I can disconnect from the grid and use my generator . . . until the fuel runs out. Meanwhile we have lots of fruit trees and other edibles on the property, not to mention Frau Chunkster's Armageddon stash of non-perishable comfort foods. Maybe it's time to buy bigger propane tanks.

Today has set a record, in my short time on PW, for insanely childish comments in several of these threads.  If these posters behave IRL like they do in here, they probably won't last long in a crisis event here on BI and they probably won't last long on BI regardless.

Mature people who have internalized and live aloha will thrive in any situation.  We have each other's backs.

they probably won't last long in a crisis

What with being unvaccinated and all.

Which ones would you shoot on sight as a matter of general principle?
